SUMMARY:Twisters Talk with Local Meteorologists
DESCRIPTION:The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center has recruited two of Pittsburgh’s favorite local media personalities—and foremost weather experts—to help enhance guests’ enjoyment of Twisters. \n\n\n\nWPXI’s Scott Harbaugh and KDKA’s Ron Smiley will be at the Theater on Friday\, July 26\, at 7 p.m. for a special conversation tied to Twisters. Our guests are welcome to stick around after the Theater’s 4:30 p.m. Twisters showing or head over before the 7:30 p.m. screening to catch this free program headlined by two of this region’s most accomplished meteorologists. Patrons who have already seen Twisters are also welcome to attend this exclusive event.  \n\n\n\nHarbaugh and Smiley will chat for 20-25 minutes about the art of meteorology\, why the Pittsburgh area has seen so many tornadoes already this summer\, and what the original 1996 Twister got right (and wrong) about one of nature’s most fascinating and destructive weather phenomena. \n\n\n\n“Twister was out right when I was in college\,” says Smiley. “It wasn’t like anything we had ever seen before. On top of that\, the science was accurate! I think that’s what lots of us really appreciate.” \n\n\n\nBoth he and Harbaugh can’t wait to see what Hollywood came up with for Twisters\, which is already garnering strong early reviews. Entertainment Weekly recently declared that Twisters “is just about as good as a summer movie gets.” \n\n\n\n“I think the movie looks amazing!” says Harbaugh. “The technology in it looks phenomenal. It’s the kind of movie where you’re not going to be able to sit back the entire time.” \n\n\n\nBoth Harbaugh and Smiley are excited about this rare in-person opportunity to connect with their loyal viewers—and reconnect with each other. \n\n\n\n“Scott and myself\, we really get along\,” Smiley says. “It’s going to be fun hanging with him\, talking science\, weather and some of the challenges we go through forecasting in Western Pennsylvania.” \n\n\n\nAdds Harbaugh: “Any time I get to hang out with someone in town who does the same thing as me\, it’s always a good time. I’m looking forward to hanging out with Ron and catching up. It’s nice to do something face to face for once!”

DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s next Emerging Filmmakers Showcase will be centered around an exciting new production company with big plans for Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNicholas Geisler and Bennett Cordon—co-founders of Los Angeles-based Salt Cellar Productions—will be at The Lindsay on Thursday\, Aug. 15\, at 7:30 p.m. to screen three diverse and compelling short films\, participate in a Q&A\, and reveal exclusive details about the feature film Salt Cellar plans to shoot throughout Pittsburgh next year. This Showcase is a free event\, but guests will need to RSVP in advance due to space limitations. \n\n\n\n“Salt Cellar is dedicated to telling smart\, entertaining\, and humanist stories exploring the interplay between individuals\, technology and their communities\,” says Geisler. “We can’t wait to bring those stories to Pittsburgh’s vibrant independent film scene!” \n\n\n\nThe three films screening at The Lindsay\, all produced by Geisler and Cordon\, are: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n• When You Became Us\, a 10-minute sci-fi comedy written and directed by Geisler. The film follows a couple struggling to remain on the same page in a world where technology can merge our minds with the internet—and each other. The feature film that Salt Cellar intends to shoot in Pittsburgh is a fleshed-out version of When You Became Us that’s also set in this region. \n\n\n\n• Come As You Are\, a 16-minute drama chronicling the experiences of a young gay man navigating new and old relationships following a life-changing diagnosis. \n\n\n\n• Shut Up\, Jack\, a 9-minute comedy that premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival. The film takes place at a house party in which the titular Jack commits an embarrassing faux pas and becomes racked with anxiety. \n\n\n\nThe Salt Cellar duo both believe in\, as Cordon put it\, the importance of “forging community and conversation” through their work.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Salt Cellar imbues every project with a boundless passion for storytelling\,” says Geisler. “We’ve found a similar spirit and love for film at the Lindsay Theater.” \n\n\n\n\n\nAdds Cordon: “We bring stories to life that tackle a spectrum of perspectives and moments of human connection. DESCRIPTION:This event is SOLD OUT. \n\n\n\nFor the past 32 years\, Dr. Jim Withers has walked the streets and crawled under the bridges of Pittsburgh by night to provide medical care to the city’s homeless people. \n\n\n\nHis remarkable story is told in producer-writer-director Jeff Sewald’s documentary\, Go to the People\, which will be screened for free on Thursday\, Aug. 22\, at 7:30 p.m.\, as part of The Lindsay’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase. The 60-minute film will be followed by a Q&A with Sewald and Dr. Withers. \n\n\n\n\nNamed one of CNN’s Top 10 Heroes in 2015\, Withers\, an internist\, was inspired by childhood memories of accompanying his father\, a family physician\, on house calls\, and his mother\, a nurse\, on home-care visits.  \n\n\n\n“It was normal in my family to care. And my parents didn’t just talk about it; they put caring into action\,” he told Pittsburgh Quarterly. “Seeing that gave me a sense of purpose\, and it was during those years that I decided to become a doctor.” \n\n\n\n\nWhen he first began his nighttime rounds\, with a formerly homeless man as his guide\, “Dr. Jim\,” dressed like a homeless person and gained acceptance on the streets\, under the bridges\, and in homeless encampments. Before long\, his dedication and compassion inspired others to join him in his mission. The program\, called Operation Safety Net\, is now recognized as one of the nation’s first full-time “street medicine” concerns\, and it continues to set the standard for this unique form of health care. \n\n\n\n\n“When I decided to make this film\, Jim told me that I would be forever changed by it\, and he was right\,” said Jeff Sewald\, an award-winning filmmaker and writer. “I learned from him that every interaction with homeless people must begin by listening to their concerns and\, sometimes\, just hearing their stories.” \n\n\n\n“My work with people living on the streets came not so much from my sense that they needed me\, but that I needed them\,” said Dr. Withers. “I see pieces of myself in every homeless person that I meet\, and consider it a privilege to be welcomed into their camps to connect with them as human beings.” \n\n\n\n\nShowcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, present different artistic voices and encourage exchanges between local filmmakers and the public. \n\n\n\nWhile admission is free to all Emerging Filmmakers Showcase events\, those attending are asked to RSVP at The Lindsay’s ticketing page to ensure seating for all.

DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nA grandfather and granddaughter forge a special connection in Grandpa and Shorty\, the next screening in The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase series. \n\n\n\n\nGrandpa and Shorty is a 51-minute drama about a military family who begins to repair fractured relationships by bonding over shared values. It hails from Pittsburgh-based White Ball Productions\, which was co-founded by Grandpa and Shorty director Jeff Balmert and writer John Rokosz. The goal of Grandpa and Shorty was always “to highlight the emotions and drama that military families struggle with everyday\,” explains Rokosz. \n\n\n\nThe Thursday\, Sept. 26\, screening starts at 7:30 p.m. with opening remarks by combat veteran and bestselling author Sean Parnell. The film will be immediately followed by a Q&A with Balmert and Rokosz. Tickets are free\, but guests are encouraged to RSVP in advance via The Lindsay’s website to ensure seating for all. \n\n\n\n\n“With a story aimed at bringing soldiers and civilians together\, we’re delighted to work with The Lindsay Theater to share this message free of charge with our hometown\,” says Rokosz. “We recognize the opportunities that The Lindsay Theater has given to emerging filmmakers in Pittsburgh and honor the contributions they’ve made to our beloved Pittsburgh community at large.” \n\n\n\nThis Pittsburgh-filmed project follows Al Androwski\, a 70-year-old Army veteran and grandfather (Howard Elson) whose wife recently died and whose estranged son (Curtis Caldwell) is currently serving as a medevac pilot in Afghanistan. Al is thrown for a loop when his daughter-in-law (Se Marie Volk) unexpectedly needs him to babysit his granddaughter (Tori Flanders). \n\n\n\nBalmert is a Duquesne University and Carnegie Mellon University graduate\, veteran filmmaker and experienced voiceover artist. Rokosz is a fellow Duquesne alumnus and classically trained musician who both composed and performed Grandpa and Shorty’s score. \n\n\n\n\n“Producing this film has been a 6-year labor of love\,” Rokosz continues. “I’m grateful for our team’s dedication\, and for our united belief in the film’s authentic message of faith\, family and duty. We can’t wait to share this story with our hometown\, the world at large\, and especially all active and veteran military families who we strive to honor through this film.”

This next entry in The Lindsay’s ongoing Emerging Filmmakers Showcase series is set for Thursday\, Oct. 17\, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free\, but we encourage RSVPs in advance—especially for an event like this\, that’s already at half capacity! \n\n\n\nA Q&A directly following the screening will feature writer-director Joshua Maley\, a local filmmaker and founder of Monaca-based Grimm Sleeper Productions; stars Hannah Keeley\, Hattie Baier and (Sewickley native) David Dietz; special effects “gore master” Jason Proakis; editor Holly Grayson; and director of photography Kevin Kukler. \n\n\n\nKeeley\, a United Kingdom native with international stage and film-acting experience\, takes center stage in Waltz. She plays Alice\, who begins selling erotic photos of herself online after losing her job. She gains a following—including one fan who quickly takes things too far.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The inspiration for Waltz came from my interest in what really makes a monster\,” says Maley.  “In a way\, we’re all monsters sometimes. We all do good and bad things\, and sometimes we do the bad things for a good reason\, or we do the good things for a bad reason.” \n\n\n\nMaley\, a Beaver County native\, attended Point Park University and Full Sail University in Florida before he founded Grimm Sleeper Productions in 2015. His first short\, the thriller 415\, earned four awards—including Audience Choice and Best Writing—at the Haunted Oaks Film Festival; was an official selection at the 2021 Moscow Gold Film Festival and the Bite Size Film Festival; and scored top awards at the Pittsburgh Moving Picture Festival’s 2023 Thriller Picture Show. \n\n\n\nThe trailer for Waltz received the Best Trailer Award at the 2023 Prodigy Film Fest. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWaltz is Maley’s first feature film\, and he always intended to premiere it at The Lindsay. \n\n\n\n“The experience of a cozy\, small-town theater just makes everything more enjoyable and feel less commercial\,” he says. “It was also important for me to screen my first feature close to home\, but in a central location easily accessible by my colleagues. The Lindsay checks all the boxes. DESCRIPTION:Ninety percent of the public thinks America is having a mental health crisis\, according to the American Psychological Association. \n\n\n\nThis crisis includes anxiety\, depression\, eating disorders and much more\, says Benjamin Carlucci\, an award-winning filmmaker and Creative Director at the Strong Mind Project\, a local mental health awareness nonprofit. On Sunday\, Oct. 20\, from 5:30 to 9 p.m.\, The Lindsay will host the inaugural Strong Mind Showcase. \n\n\n\nThis free event features a pre-screening panel discussion with mental health professionals and advocates. Afterward\, two hours of short films\, separated by an intermission\, aim to promote empathy\, insight and understanding in the mental health space. \n\n\n\n“The Strong Mind Project is dedicated to cultivating conversations and raising awareness in the mental health space\,” says Carlucci\, a Squirrel Hill resident. “Our upcoming showcase will bring together talented artists with mental health professionals and advocates for the theme of ‘making the invisible\, visible.’” \n\n\n\nActivities begin at 5:45 p.m. with a panel discussion featuring Matt Walsh\, Oasis Mental Health’s co-founder and chief clinical officer; Listen Lucy CEO Jordan Corcoran; and artist Hayden Caico\, whose short film\, The Creature and Me\, will screen at the festival. \n\n\n\nFilm selections\, starting at 6:45 p.m.\, will share the best of more than 2\,000 submissions from 106 countries. He’s currently in residence as this semester’s Visiting Documentary Filmmaker at Robert Morris University. \n\n\n\nHe’ll be at The Lindsay on Thursday\, Nov. 7\, at 7 p.m. to share five of his documentary shorts as part of a specially curated Queering the Documentary program. Those screenings will be followed by a Q&A with O’Keefe. Tickets to this event are free\, but RSVPs are encouraged in advance due to space limitations. \n\n\n\n\nSome of O’Keefe’s films that will be screened on Nov. 7 include Our Transition\, which explores O’Keefe’s gender transition from his parents’ perspective; Imagine a Body\, an essay film on the spiritual nature of hormone replacement therapy for transgender men that premiered in 2022 as part of the The New Yorker Documentary Series; and No More Longing\, an immersive portrait of Brazilian musician Jaime Jobim that premiered at SFFilm in San Francisco. \n\n\n\n\n“It is a pleasure to work with our Visiting Documentary Filmmaker each fall semester\,” says Jen Stratakis\, RMU’s Arts & Humanities’ media outreach coordinator. “I have the privilege of helping each one connect with the RMU student body and greater Pittsburgh film community to share their work in a meaningful way. This semester\, Connor Lee O’Keefe brings his beautiful take on storytelling to our campus and our town. He is eloquent and his films are inspiring.”   \n\n\n\nThis is the second year in a row that The Lindsay will be hosting a Robert Morris Visiting Documentary Filmmaker’s public showcase. \n\n\n\n\n“I’m honored to have been able to continue refining my work as an artist with RMU and to have an opportunity to participate in fruitful dialogue with audiences at The Lindsay\,” says O’Keefe. “We need independent theaters to keep this art form doing what it does best—and that’s bringing people together.” \n\n\n\nRMU’s Visiting Documentary Filmmaker program is a 15-week residency that requires participants to teach a documentary introduction class\, create and share their work\, and actively engage with the RMU faculty\, student body and general community. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“We need queer and trans perspectives now more than ever\,” says O’Keefe. “I hope these films immerse you into a space that allows you to wonder\, heal and grow.”

DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nPittsburgh produces quite a bit of independently made horror films. Rarely\, though\, do those cinematic endeavors venture into folk horror territory. \n\n\n\nFor the uninitiated\, “folk horror” is a cinematic sub-genre known for isolated environments\, an emphasis on nature\, and utilizing real or fictional folklore to invoke terror and dread. That’s exactly what Jess Kaeden was aspiring for with KHAF\, her locally filmed feature about a Pennsylvania farm family being terrorized by a demon hellbent on obtaining their firstborn child. \n\n\n\nKHAF will have its world premiere on Thursday\, Nov. 21\, at 7 p.m. as the next entry in the The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s ongoing Emerging Filmmakers Showcase series. That screening will be immediately followed by a Q&A with writer-director Kaeden; co-writers Jason Burke and Justen Kimball; and other members of the KHAF filmmaking team. \n\n\n\n\nTickets are free\, but RSVPs are encouraged in advance due to space limitations. \n\n\n\n“What makes KHAF sort of different from anything that anybody’s doing around here is that it’s more folk horror\,” says Kaeden\, the founder of locally based Spinning Web Productions. “The A24 atmosphere and aesthetic\, you don’t really see that around here.” \n\n\n\nKHAF stars a slew of recognizable local talent\, including Samantha Ainsworth\, Hattie Baier\, Brian Ceponis\, Kenneth Pierce and David Ogrodowski. The film was produced by\, among others\, Mike Ancas (Day of the Dead) and Wes Fisher (Children as Giants). \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAinsworth plays Vera Darling\, who is forced to confront her family’s dark past that’s tied to an ancient cult and child-sacrifice rituals in service of Moloch\, an ancient Carthaginian demon. Kaeden said she drew inspiration for KHAF from recent Hollywood folk horror hits like Robert Eggers’ The Witch and Ari Aster’s Midsommar. \n\n\n\nShe wants to make sure everyone interested in attending the KHAF world premiere knows that her film deals with “deep psychological traumas.”  \n\n\n\nKaeden is a 24-year-old Connellsville native and graduate of the George A. Romero Filmmaking Program. KHAF was shot during summer and fall 2022 largely on farmland in Belle Vernon. Kaeden also set her film in the Keystone State because “I didn’t want to make a film out of Pennsylvania and call it somewhere else.” \n\n\n\n\nShe can’t wait for this unique example of Western Pennsylvania-filmed folk horror to debut next week at The Lindsay. \n\n\n\n“We’re all about supporting independent filmmakers\,” Kaeden says. “Pennsylvania is very centered around independent filmmakers\, but it’s very special to have a venue that has these Emerging Filmmaker Showcases. As an independent filmmaker\, I feel very honored.”

House of Tears began as a suggestion by a friend of Poe’s to make a short film involving a house. \n\n\n\n“I always loved the board game and movie Clue\,” says Poe. “So for my first foray into the horror genre\, I decided that I wanted to make a movie similar to that film\, but more horror-based.” \n\n\n\nThat initial idea eventually evolved into a script for a feature-length murder mystery. DESCRIPTION:Five exciting documentaries celebrating this region’s athletic spirit—all for $11!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets Available here!\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Allegheny Sport & Outdoor Film Festival will hold a “Local Legends” screening at the Sewickley nonprofit theater on Sunday\, Jan. 26\, at 1 p.m.  ASOFF is a Pittsburgh-based project celebrating sport\, outdoor culture and adventure documentary films with a special emphasis on stories from Western Pennsylvania\, Northern Appalachia and the mid-Atlantic region. \n\n\n\nFive documentaries will be shown\, most of them spotlighting a Western Pennsylvania-based athlete or organization. This event will also include Q&As with a director or subject from each film. Tickets\, including admission to all films\, are available for $11.  \n\n\n\n“The goal is to highlight this region’s outdoor spirit and bring it up to par with festivals and outdoor recreation on the national and international level\,” says Rishi Sethi\, CEO of locally based malhari.media and ASOFF’s communications and operations director. “This ‘Local Legends’ screening should be an exciting way for folks to see what’s going on in their own backyard.” \n\n\n\n\nThe five “Local Legends” films are: \n\n\n\n• We Ride (65 minutes)\, which follows three cyclists from Pittsburgh Youth Leadership endeavoring to cycle across America in just 18 days. \n\n\n\n• To Be The Man (3 minutes)\, which focuses on Michael “Gagz” Gagliardi’s battle for a fifth consecutive win at the Loopy Looper 12-hour Endurance Race. \n\n\n\n• First Waves Beaver County (5 minutes)\, a Sethi-directed documentary chronicling the expansion of the Watersmith Guild’s groundbreaking youth environmental education program into the Beaver and Ohio River valleys following the ethylene cracker plant’s pollution penalties. \n\n\n\n• Richard Hamilton (4 minutes)\, which profiles a wood-cutter and professional chainsaw carver. \n\n\n\n• Heaven on Earth (15 minutes)\, which follows the Highland Park Tennis Club as its members prepare for the start of the 2023 season. \n\n\n\nASOFF’s last engagement was at Downtown’s Harris Theater in November 2024. Festival director Chas Wagner chose The Lindsay for “Local Legends” because “there aren’t a lot of theaters that are welcoming to this kind of community programming.” \n\n\n\n“Part of our mission is to get outside of just the city\,” says Wagner. “The Lindsay is a great venue.”

DESCRIPTION:The Lindsay is hosting the exclusive regional run of Swissvale native Billy Gardell’s new gambling drama.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets Available here!\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center will be the only place in Western Pennsylvania for fans of Swissvale native Billy Gardell to check out his first-ever lead dramatic role in a film. \n\n\n\nThe Vortex is set in the 1980s and stars Gardell as Pete Finnegan\, a gambling addict and the in-house comedian at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Pete ends up playing shrink to a host of colorful misfits while dodging mobsters and “collectors.” \n\n\n\nThe Vortex will play at The Lindsay from Feb. 14-20. Tickets are currently on sale for $11. \n\n\n\nThe Lindsay will be one of only a few theaters around the country licensed to show The Vortex during its initial theatrical run. The film will also debut in Los Angeles\, Chicago and Orlando\, Fla. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n“My hometown has been behind me since the early days\, so I try to share everything I do with Pittsburgh\,” says Gardell\, a comedian most well-known for his starring roles in CBS sitcoms Mike & Molly and Bob Hearts Abishola. “They made me who I am\, and so they will always get the first look.” \n\n\n\nThe film’s title refers to Gardell’s character “being caught in the vortex of his gambling addiction\,” says director and co-writer Richard Zelniker. Its cast also includes Jaina Lee Ortiz (Station 19)\, Jamie McShane (Wednesday)\, Azita Ghanizada (Suits: L.A.)\, Emily Alabi (FBI)\, Nick Gomez (Fargo) and Christopher Titus (Titus). \n\n\n\n“As the co-writer\, producer and director\, I’m humbled and grateful to say I believe we’ve created something truly special\,” Zelniker says. “I envisioned this film being experienced in the sacred space of a theater—on the silver screen\, in the dark\, with an audience.” \n\n\n\nPittsburghers will definitely want to watch Gardell flex his dramatic muscles in The Vortex. \n\n\n\n“It was a great experience to play a different tone as an actor\, and this film gave me a chance to do that\,” Gardell says. “I think that’s the key to continuing to get better and better at your job.” \n\n\n\nAdds Zelniker: “There’s nothing better than seeing a local hero like Billy Gardell shine in such a unique way. DESCRIPTION:Get ready for the 2025 Academy Awards with some of Pittsburgh’s finest film critics and experts!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center is offering local cinephiles and awards-season enthusiasts a rare opportunity to hear from experts about the 2025 Oscars. \n\n\n\nAmanda Waltz\, Pittsburgh City Paper’s entertainment editor\, will moderate a wide-ranging discussion and Q&A with a panel comprising Pittsburgh Film Critics Association members Lindsey Bahr (Associated Press)\, Sean Collier (Pittsburgh Magazine) and Megan McLachlan (The Contending). Josh Axelrod\, The Lindsay’s Director of Communications and an active PFCA member\, will also be on hand.  \n\n\n\nThis free and non-ticketed event will take place in The Lindsay’s Community Room on Sunday\, Feb. 16\, at 2 p.m. These professional critics and journalists will provide their thoughts on this year’s Oscars race\, films that seem to be over- or underperforming with voters\, their ideal Oscars scenarios and much more. They’ll then take audience questions. \n\n\n\n\nLindsey Bahr has been an Associated Press film critic since 2014. While based in the Pittsburgh area\, Bahr is a regular at Hollywood’s glitziest awards shows. She covered this year’s Golden Globes ceremony and plans to be at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the 2025 Oscars.  \n\n\n\nSean Collier is Pittsburgh Magazine’s managing editor and film guru. He’s also a stand-up comic\, co-founder of Vigilance Theater Group\, co-host of The Number One Movie in America podcast\, and a regular on WDVE and Pittsburgh Today Live. \n\n\n\nMegan McLachlan\, a former Awards Daily contributor\, recently co-founded the awards advocacy site The Contending. Her work also has appeared in Buzzfeed\, Cosmopolitan\, The Cut\, Paste\, Thrillist\, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and The Washington Post. \n\n\n\nThe Pittsburgh Film Critics Association\, formed in 2023 by 15 Western Pennsylvania-based critics\, announced its first-ever film awards earlier this year. They collectively crowned The Substance\, a Best Picture nominee at the Oscars\, as 2024’s best picture. \n\n\n\nHearing from these film aficionados might prove helpful to anyone who hasn’t submitted their ballot for The Lindsay’s annual Oscars contest. Completed ballots—available only at the Theater—will be accepted until Saturday\, March 1\, at 8 p.m. The film buff who most accurately predicts the highest number of winners—matching the Academy’s Best Picture—will earn a non-transferable pass for free\, unlimited movies for the rest of 2025!

Both screenings are taking place ahead of the film’s WQED broadcast premiere on June 10 at 9 p.m. and before Oakmont hosts its 10th U.S. Open from June 12-15.  \n\n\n\nThroughout the film\, former Pirate Neil Walker leads viewers on this heartfelt tour of the Western Pennsylvania he knows and loves. Turkel’s vision with Steel Links was to do the same for Pittsburgh ahead of the U.S. Open at Oakmont. \n\n\n\nWestern Pennsylvania became Turkel’s “home away from home” after frequent visits to his wife’s hometown. Through Steel Links\, Turkel was able to dive deep into Pittsburgh’s modern tech\, arts\, music and sports scenes. He even united Walker\, Batch\, Mediate and Semple Thompson for 18 holes at Verona’s Long Vue Club. \n\n\n\nIn the film\, “We hear stories sharing their individual experiences with their sports and Pittsburgh\,” Turkel says. “Steel Links is told through the eyes and voices of well-known Pittsburghers. DESCRIPTION:Bradley Cooper produced this film about the joys and struggles of life as a full-time caregiver.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP Here!\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay\, WQED and Comfort Keepers are partnering to show a new PBS documentary about the triumphs and challenges of being a caregiver. \n\n\n\nCaregiving spotlights the stories of everyday folks—both paid and unpaid—as they navigate the rewarding and exhausting work inherent in caring for ill or aging loved ones. It was produced by Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper and narrated by Emmy winner Uzo Aduba\, who both served as caregivers for a sick parent. \n\n\n\nThe Lindsay is showing Caregiving on Thursday\, June 26\, at 7 p.m. The 30-minute screening will be preceded by a reception in the Theater’s Community Room from 6-7 p.m. and followed by a Q&A with local experts in caregiving and at-home care. \n\n\n\nThis event is free\, but RSVPs are required. It is being co-sponsored by Comfort Keepers\, an organization providing in-home care to communities across Western Pennsylvania\, and WQED\, Pittsburgh’s PBS affiliate that also recently collaborated with The Lindsay on the public premiere of the documentary Steel Links. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nCaregiving largely focuses on the experiences of six family and professional caregivers. The featured caregivers include Matthew\, a young father caring for both his wife and son; Jacob\, a 14-year-old who\, along with his father\, shares the role of caregiver for his mom; Tracy\, a young woman looking after her dementia-stricken father; and Zulma\, a paid home health aide with a family of her own. \n\n\n\n“Making this film has been an inspiring and humbling experience\,” says Chris Durrance\, the film’s director and senior producer. “We have come to appreciate that every family has a care story and we hope that this film inspires viewers to share their own\, building new communities of care that will bring us all closer together.” \n\n\n\nThose care stories extend to Hollywood stars Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) and Aduba (Orange is the New Black). The film was partially inspired by Cooper’s experiences taking care of his late father\, who had lung cancer. “Their ability to focus and give all of themselves is something that I stand in awe of\,” Cooper says during Caregiving in regards to his fellow caregivers. \n\n\n\nAduba played a similar role for her late mother\, who died in 2020 after a 495-day battle with pancreatic cancer. “I belong to the caregiving community\,” she told USA Today. She hopes that Caregiving serves as “a reminder that every single one of us is touched by the need for care.”

This 50-minute feature follows two best friends with opposing dispositions on a journey of self-discovery over one particularly eventful night. \n\n\n\nZazu’s film will premiere at The Lindsay on Monday\, July 14\, at 7 p.m. Tickets are free\, but RSVPs are recommended. Though it’s not required\, Zazu would love if all attendees dressed in formal attire. The film will be followed by an in-person Q&A with Zazu\, stars Kain Davis and McKenna Howell\, director of photography Steven Croner\, and first assistant director Sophia Beigi. \n\n\n\nDavis stars as Richie Hilton\, a privileged but insecure aspiring real estate professional. Richie’s best friend\, Tanner (Robert Starzynski)\, is more playful and grounded. Tanner is generally amused by Richie’s behavior\, but his erratic tendencies have increasingly become a source of exasperation. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe main cast also includes Howell\, David Ogrodowski\, Alyssa Wenzel and Mya Favata. Ogrodowski\, a prolific Pittsburgh actor\, also produced Zazu’s feature directorial debut. \n\n\n\nZazu has been directing\, writing and editing films for the last eight years. The Milwaukee native moved to Pittsburgh in 2022 and quickly began churning out short films like Purple and 80 Grand. Zazu finds purpose in connecting with people and working closely with actors to bring his stories to life.

DESCRIPTION:Local filmmaker Max Cianci will screen a selection of his narrative shorts and commercial work.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP Here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay’s second Emerging Filmmakers Showcase of July shines the spotlight on one of Pittsburgh’s most talented independent filmmakers. Max Cianci is a Hermitage\, Pa.\, native who has been living and working in Pittsburgh since 2014. The Point Park University alumnus has plenty of experience directing both narrative and commercial shorts. Cianci has plans for many projects down the pipeline—and he’s giving Lindsay patrons a taste of what’s to come. The Filmworks of Max Cianci will exclusively screen at The Lindsay on Thursday\, July 17\, at 7 p.m. This event is free\, but RSVPs are recommended. The evening will include a few Cianci-directed commercials\, three narrative short films\, a proof-of-concept short\, and an in-person Q&A with Cianci. \n\n\n\n\n\nCianci will unveil his proof of concept short film\, Tiny Toe. This is a short that he intends to make into a larger project. It follows a hunter who discovers an unusual creature in one of his traps. His hope is to create something that stands amongst the great lineage of creature and monster filmmaking here in Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\nThis event will also be the rare chance to see two other Cianci shorts on the big screen: 2020’s Loopy: A Quarantine Short Film\, co-directed by and starring Cianci\, is about a man investigating a seemingly abandoned building; and 2021’s The Sale\, about two thieves who get more than they bargained for during a looting run. Loopy was selected for over twenty film festivals during its run\, including the National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY). The Sale received the Audience Choice Award at Pittsburgh Short’s Thriller Chiller screening. \n\n\n\nHe will also screen Crypt\, a 48 Hour Film Project production that won Best Cinematography\, Best Actress\, and Audience Choice. Crypt follows a woman who must escape after she wakes up during the process of being mummified. Cianci and his team created this film completely over the course of a single weekend.

Their film\, inspired by true events\, follows a hypothermia researcher struggling with the morally tricky notion of using potentially life-saving data that was obtained from a terrible source. \n\n\n\nKovitz’s feature directorial debut will screen at The Lindsay on Thursday\, July 31\, at 7 p.m. Tickets are free\, but RSVPs are recommended in advance. \n\n\n\nAmy Marsalis stars as Dr. Sidney Randall\, a researcher who stumbles across invaluable data that was gathered during experiments at long-defunct Nazi death camps. Dr. Randall recruits a team to help her navigate the cutthroat world of health-ethics debates and (hopefully) earn the medical establishment’s approval to validate her findings. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe main cast also includes Kovitz\, Dominique Brock\, Daniel Klein\, Lisa Ann Goldsmith and Ken Bolden. \n\n\n\nKovitz is an actor\, writer\, musician\, producer and award-winning filmmaker. His acting credits range from Broadway and regional theater to TV and feature films. He also teaches acting for the camera at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama while also directing\, producing and editing the school’s acting and musical theater showcase video material. Kovitz has also worked as a fight director and stunt coordinator and performer—most notably\, as Raul Julia’s fencing double in 1991’s The Addams Family big-screen adaptation. \n\n\n\nVargish is a writer and producer with an MFA in dramatic writing from Carnegie Mellon University. She has produced several independent web series and short films in the Pittsburgh area\, as well as working on projects in Seattle and Los Angeles. Vargish has also produced film work for Pitt Stages\, CMU\, 1Hood Media and Ryse Professional Wrestling.

Brookline’s Jameson Quinn directed this 39-minute project that will hopefully serve as the premiere episode for a full TV season. \n\n\n\nHis pilot will premiere at The Lindsay on Thursday\, Aug. 21\, at 7 p.m. Tickets are free\, but RSVPs are recommended in advance due to space limitations. Quinn will be on hand for a Q&A following the screening. \n\n\n\nChristina Chickis stars as Marylou Caponi\, a boxing gym owner navigating a sordid world and her complicated feelings for Dan McClain (Quinn)\, her head trainer and a former fighter. The cast also includes Jose Caraballo\, Andrew Diskin\, Christine Mancini\, Ryan Covert\, Jess Uhler\, and Eddie Holliday. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nQuinn spent his formative years in Brookline writing\, playing ice hockey and competing as an amateur boxer. He is now living his dream as a professional actor and filmmaker. In addition to regularly appearing in regional independent projects\, Quinn also often finds work in locally filmed Hollywood fare like The Dark Knight Rises\, One Dollar and Mayor of Kingstown. \n\n\n\nKeegan graduated from Peabody High School in 1965 and joined the Air Force a year later. After finishing his military stint in 1969\, Keegan worked for Bell of Pennsylvania—now Verizon Pennsylvania—until his retirement in 2002. Keegan was an amateur boxer in the 1960s\, and his knowledge of that scene helped inspire and inform Strange Angels.

Rohrer will be on hand following those screenings for an in-person Q&A. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTrial 54 stars Molly Miller as Sarah\, a participant in an experiment designed to help regain memories. As outside forces close in\, the truth of what this trial is actually hoping to prove unfolds—along with the ambitions of her doctor\, Miles Heston (Jack Erdie). The Trial 54 cast includes Mickey Miller and Natalya Wood. \n\n\n\nRohrer is a New Jersey native\, WVU graduate and military veteran. He has filmed many advertisements\, news packages\, documentaries\, training videos\, live events and more during his 13 years in the Army National Guard. In addition to short films\, Rohrer also has experience filming music-related content in West Virginia\, New York and Washington\, D.C. He hopes to eventually film a feature-length Trial 54 in Pittsburgh.

Its two stars\, Emily Miller and Judy Beerman\, are jovial figures with deep roots in that very tourist-friendly area. \n\n\n\nSix weeks into filming\, Hurricane Ian ravaged the Florida coast—including the tiny island of Sanibel. There was no way director Jamie Winterstern’s film could continue as planned amidst so much destruction and despair. \n\n\n\n“It looked like a nuclear bomb had let off\,” Miller told WBBH-TV. “All I could do was cry and say\, ‘My beloved island!’” \n\n\n\nWinterstern’s film suddenly became an exercise in capturing a grieving community’s efforts to heal and rebuild. So then why does so much plastic still end up in our oceans? Duane Rieder\, founder of The Clemente Museum in Lawrenceville and a prominent local photographer\, will introduce the 4:30 p.m. Clemente screening on Sunday\, Sept. 14. \n\n\n\nDirector David Altrogge’s film spotlights Pirates legend Roberto Clemente’s amazing life\, baseball career\, and why he remains such a revered figure in Western Pennsylvania and beyond. \n\n\n\nThe film starts with Clemente’s childhood in Puerto Rico\, takes viewers through his Pirates heyday\, and immortalizes The Great One’s philanthropic legacy that was tragically exemplified by his 1972 death in a plane crash while delivering aid to Nicaragua. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe documentary includes interviews with Clemente’s sons\, Luis and Robert Jr.; the last interview with his late wife\, Vera; multiple Pirates legends; contemporary Major League Baseball stars like Francisco Lindor and Yadier Molina; Pittsburgh-raised movie star Michael Keaton; and Rita Moreno\, an Oscar-winning actor and fellow Puerto Rican icon. \n\n\n\nAltrogge is the co-founder of locally based production company Vinegar Hill. He and Vinegar Hill co-founder Michael Barnett produced Clemente alongside a group that also includes renowned director Richard Linklater and the SpringHill Company duo of Maverick Carter and NBA superstar LeBron James. \n\n\n\nThis is the second Altrogge-directed film to play at The Lindsay. Neat: The Story of Bourbon was part of the Theater’s 2024 Documentary Series. Altrogge graciously appeared at the Theater for a Neat Q&A\, and we hope he’ll be available again to discuss making this beautiful tribute to The Great One with Lindsay patrons. \n\n\n\n“Clemente is a quintessential Pittsburgh story\,” Altrogge says. “His mission was about bringing people together. We hope this film brings people together in Pittsburgh and across the world.”

It stars Wertheimer and Jefferson Hills’ Kenny Zimlinghaus as two guys whose lives are forever changed after a chance meeting in Chicago. \n\n\n\nThis two-hander will have its Western Pennsylvania premiere at The Lindsay on Thursday\, Sept. 18\, at 7 p.m. Zimlinghaus will be on hand for an in-person Q&A following the screening. Tickets are free\, but RSVPs are recommended in advance due to space limitations. \n\n\n\nKenny (Zimlinghaus) meets Aaron (Wertheimer) during a work trip to Chicago. Aaron convinces him to extend that trip. But when Kenny’s car explodes and Aaron gets selective amnesia\, will their fledgling friendship survive? The Not If I See You First cast also includes Johanna Wertheimer\, Elizabeth Stam and Leslie Crum. \n\n\n\n\nZimlinghaus is a Long Island\, N.Y.\, native who has been living in Western Pennsylvania for the past decade. The actor and nationally touring comedian is also a radio/podcast program coordinator in Robert Morris University’s Academic Media Center. His Not If I See You First character is also a Pittsburgher\, and he wears a “pretty sweet Pittsburgh shirt” for a large portion of his screen time.  \n\n\n\n“Pittsburgh has been a special place for me\, and not just since I moved here\,” Zimlinghaus says. “My wife is from here\, and I’ve learned to really fall in love with it here. So getting to know the city and its humor\, I think this film fits right into the funny\, zany and obscure things people from Pittsburgh may find amusing. I’m looking forward to the screening\, and hope I do the Steel City proud!” \n\n\n\nWertheimer is a seasoned filmmaker who has now written and directed three comedies. Fun fact: The Skokie\, Ill.\, resident’s wife and two children all appear in Not If I See You First. Another fun fact: Wertheimer’s in-laws live in Squirrel Hill\, and Mario Lemieux is his favorite hockey player. \n\n\n\n“Not If I See You First is a straight-up heartfelt comedy\, which is becoming more and more rare in indie film\,” says Wertheimer. “A big goal with the film is just for people to get lost in its absurd logic and have a good time watching it.”

It follows an alcoholic who accidentally takes a hallucinatory drug and enters a nightmarish new world. \n\n\n\nThe Lindsay will be showing Batsh*t on Thursday\, Oct. 30\, at 7 p.m. This screening will be immediately followed by an in-person Q&A with director and co-writer Todd Wolfson\, star Jerry Pietrala and editor Karl O’Janpa. The event is free\, and The Lindsay recommends that all attendees use the form below to RSVP in advance due to space limitations. \n\n\n\nWolfson\, a Pittsburgh native and founder of production company Just Buried Entertainment\, is making his feature directorial debut with Batsh*t. The film stars Pietrala as Felix Darby\, a lost soul on a mind-altering journey. Along the way\, Felix encounters oddities such as a friend talking in tongues\, his roommate turning into an 8-bit character\, a talking killer cherry pie\, being haunted by his own ghost and much more. \n\n\n\nWolfson has been working on BatSh*t since 2018. He co-wrote the script with David Ogrodowski\, a veteran local filmmaker and actor who also appears in the film. The largely Western Pennsylvania-based cast also includes Tiffany Kemp\, Mikhail Tot\, Edward Pfeifer\, Nexus Lyons\, Samantha Ainsworth\, Brian Ceponis and Ben Dietels. \n\n\n\nBatsh*t is a mostly live-action film that also contains wild sequences involving both 2D and 3D animation\, stop-motion effects\, claymation—and even puppets! Be prepared for what Wolfson describes as a “very zany and original” cinematic experience. \n\n\n\n“This is a very important film to me\,” Wolfson says. “It’s jam-packed with a lot of Pittsburgh’s most talented actors. DESCRIPTION:Join former Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier for an exclusive ‘Caregiving’ screening!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets Here!\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay has partnered with WQED and the Ryan Shazier Fund for Spinal Rehabilitation to bring back Caregiving during National Family Caregivers Month. \n\n\n\nThe PBS documentary Caregiving returns to The Lindsay on Wednesday\, Nov. 19\, at 7 p.m. We will show the full-length version of director Chris Durrance’s inspirational film.  \n\n\n\nThis event will also include a 6:30 p.m. reception in The Lindsay’s Community Room\, sponsored by the Richard King Mellon Foundation. Shazier\, a former Steelers linebacker\, will attend the reception and introduce the screening. Tickets are available for $8.75. \n\n\n\nThis Caregiving screening was conceived as an evening of warmth\, camaraderie and recognition for all caregivers. Shazier and members of his organization will be on hand to thank caregivers for their amazing work and dedication. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCaregiving was produced by Bradley Cooper\, who also appears in the film\, and narrated by Emmy winner Uzo Aduba. Both acclaimed actors have served as caregivers for a sick parent. Caregiving highlights the many challenges and triumphs that those caring for a sick parent or loved one experience every day. \n\n\n\nSome of the caregivers featured in this film include a young father caring for both his wife and son; a 14-year-old who\, along with his father\, shares the role of caregiver for his mom; and a young woman looking after her dementia-stricken father. \n\n\n\nShazier is an Ohio State University graduate who the Steelers picked 15th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. He made two Pro Bowls with the Steelers\, but his career was abruptly ended after suffering a spinal contusion during a game in December 2017. Shazier officially retired from the NFL in September 2020. \n\n\n\nAfter 130 spinal rehabilitation sessions\, Shazier not only gained back the strength to walk\, but he was able to dance with his wife at their wedding. He founded the Shazier Fund in November 2020. Shazier currently serves as the president and board chairman for this nonprofit dedicated to ensuring SCI (spinal cord injury) patients have access to the treatments they need.

SUMMARY:Pittsburgh Zoo Celebrates 'Zootopia 2'
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free chat with two Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium educators—and an animal friend!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay is partnering with the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium for a special program that will get kids even more excited to watch Zootopia 2. \n\n\n\nJessica Ries\, a Pittsburgh Zoo interpretation manager\, and Heather Berkey\, the zoo’s volunteer services manager\, will join us in The Lindsay’s Community Room on Sunday\, Dec. 14\, at 1:45 p.m. \n\n\n\nThis free educational opportunity will start with a Q&A geared around Zootopia 2\, the sequel to Disney’s 2016 animated adventure that starts playing at The Lindsay on Wednesday\, Nov. 26. \n\n\n\nRies and Berkey will discuss their work and how zoo animals are both similar and different from their on-screen Zootopia counterparts. They’ll then introduce an “animal friend” direct from the Pittsburgh Zoo. This will be a rare chance for children to get up close and personal with a furry\, feathery or even scaly critter. \n\n\n\n\n“Movies like Zootopia and the zoo both have the goal of connecting people with animals they’re not familiar with\,” says Ries. “You can connect with wildlife in a way that’s fun\, and you can relate to the characters.” \n\n\n\nZootopia 2 sends detectives Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) on the twisting trail of a mysterious reptile who arrives in Zootopia and turns the animal metropolis upside down. To crack the case\, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town\, where their growing partnership is tested like never before. \n\n\n\nThe Lindsay is also hosting a Zootopia 2 sensory friendly screening on Saturday\, Dec. 6\, at 10 a.m. Tickets to this showing are all discounted to $8.75 each. Sensory friendly screenings provide an option for families\, children\, and adults impacted by autism and other special needs to watch films together in a low-stress environment.
