It’s set during a dinner party hosted by famous chocolate maker Vincent Loren (WTAE-TV reporter Sheldon Ingram). The 11 guests gathered at this secluded home are quickly forced to confront an unknown enemy seemingly intent on killing everyone in attendance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay’s House of Tears encore screening will take place on Thursday\, Jan. 16\, at 7 p.m. The event will also include a Q&A with Poe and other members of the filmmaking team. While the screening is free\, please be sure to RSVP as space is limited. \n\n\n\n“I wanted to premiere the movie close to home and always wanted to use The Lindsay for its classic theater feel\,” says Poe\, 25\, a Denison University graduate with a degree in commerce\, media and the arts. House of Tears began as a suggestion by a friend of Poe’s to make a short film involving a house. \n\n\n\n“I always loved the board game and movie Clue\,” says Poe. “So for my first foray into the horror genre\, I decided that I wanted to make a movie similar to that film\, but more horror-based.” \n\n\n\nThat initial idea eventually evolved into a script for a feature-length murder mystery. Pete ends up playing shrink to a host of colorful misfits while dodging mobsters and “collectors.” \n\n\n\nThe Vortex will play at The Lindsay from Feb. 14-20. Duane Rieder\, founder of The Clemente Museum in Lawrenceville and a prominent local photographer\, will introduce the 4:30 p.m. Clemente screening on Sunday\, Sept. 14. \n\n\n\nDirector David Altrogge’s film spotlights Pirates legend Roberto Clemente’s amazing life\, baseball career\, and why he remains such a revered figure in Western Pennsylvania and beyond. \n\n\n\nThe film starts with Clemente’s childhood in Puerto Rico\, takes viewers through his Pirates heyday\, and immortalizes The Great One’s philanthropic legacy that was tragically exemplified by his 1972 death in a plane crash while delivering aid to Nicaragua. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe documentary includes interviews with Clemente’s sons\, Luis and Robert Jr.; the last interview with his late wife\, Vera; multiple Pirates legends; contemporary Major League Baseball stars like Francisco Lindor and Yadier Molina; Pittsburgh-raised movie star Michael Keaton; and Rita Moreno\, an Oscar-winning actor and fellow Puerto Rican icon. \n\n\n\nAltrogge is the co-founder of locally based production company Vinegar Hill. He made two Pro Bowls with the Steelers\, but his career was abruptly ended after suffering a spinal contusion during a game in December 2017. This straight-edge hardcore icon embarked on a life-changing journey to India at the height of his musical popularity. Raghunath guides director Thomas Essig on an excursion throughout India while exploring how his punk and monk identities can exist together in spiritual harmony. \n\n\n\nThe public premiere of Something Divine will take place at The Lindsay on Sunday\, March 29\, at 1 p.m. Essig\, a Butler County-based filmmaker\, will be at the Theater for an in-person Q&A following the screening. Music was Essig’s first love\, and his resumé includes serving as the drummer for Pittsburgh band The Prestons in the mid-1990s. \n\n\n\nBefore Something Divine\, Essig knew Raghunath only as a local yoga teacher in the Hudson\, N.Y.\, area. A former girlfriend went on a pilgrimage to India with Raghunath in 2016\, and she informed Essig about his rock-star alter ego. \n\n\n\n“I had no idea!” recalls Essig. “She described how hardcore punk fans\, yoga students and regular Joes went to India to participate in spiritual practices. I found it fascinating that people from all walks of life come together for a two-week trip diving into spirituality.” \n\n\n\nHe remembered flippantly saying at the time\, “How come nobody has ever made a movie about this?” After going on his first pilgrimage to India with Raghunath in 2017\, Essig realized that this experience allowed lost souls to seek their own “connection to the divine.” Essig has now made nine trips to India. \n\n\n\nSomething Divine was filmed in 2019 and has since played at festivals and private screenings. The Lindsay is hosting the film’s first public theatrical showing. This event is free\, and we recommend RSVPing in advance via the sign-up form below due to space limitations. \n\n\n\nWomen in Film & Media Pittsburgh is a local nonprofit that’s dedicated to improving the status and portrayal of women in film\, video and other screen-based media. They regularly host events and organize programs that aim to empower\, promote\, support and mentor women in the Pittsburgh region with filmmaking ambitions. \n\n\n\n“One of the things I love about Pittsburgh is the strong and diverse independent film community we have here\,” says Wendy Whittick\, a local filmmaker and WIFM board secretary. “In particular\, the quality and depth of the films produced by women in Pittsburgh is inspiring. I’m proud to have the opportunity to share their work.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere’s a rundown of the 13 films that will play during this showcase: \n\n\n\n• A Girl Takes a Walk in the Forest (5 min): This film documents the production of a collaborative animation project between a mother and her elementary-age child. Directed by Kristen Lauth Schaeffer & Ro Shaeffer. \n\n\n\n• A Mother’s Muse (7 min): This short documentary spotlights women as natural artists by focusing on four generations of director Genesis Nelson’s family. \n\n\n\n• B*tch for Council (4 min): After seeing a ridiculous political sign in his yard\, Andy lets his friends convince him—a 16-year-old high schooler—to run for city council. Directed by Mikie Palermo. \n\n\n\n• Chasing Infinity (9 min): A teacher discovers a mysterious CB radio transmission from the 1950s that mayunravel time and space. Produced by Haley Jenkins. \n\n\n\n• Connie Amongi (6 min): Connie Amongi tells her life story\, including how a Ugandan extremist group upended her childhood and what a local nonprofit did to keep her safe and educated. Directed by Pauline Greenlick. \n\n\n\n• Dark and Stormy (2 min): A thunderous storm wakes Alex from his deep sleep\, and he quickly realizes that there may be a dark figure lurking in the corner of his room. Directed by Lauren Keller. \n\n\n\n• Edges (4 min): A widow grieves the loss of her husband through their shared holiday tradition of makinggingerbread houses. Directed by Delaney Hathaway. \n\n\n\n• Embracing Their Reality (5 min): This film highlights the real life struggles of caregiving for a loved one with dementia—and a better way forward. Directed by Jessica Wasserlauf. \n\n\n\n• Hammer Handed Hitchhiker (8 min): A group of teens encounter a deadly urban legend while on spring break—and find out what it means to really get hammered. Directed by Alyssa Pearson. \n\n\n\n• Last Cup of Coffee (12 min): A hitman is faced with an unpleasant task when he is asked to kill his longtime friend. Directed by Wendy Whittick. \n\n\n\n• One Day in the Life of Eddy (2 min): Eddy is a brave and determined young boy who is also one of 2 million people with a physical disability in Uganda. Directed by Pauline Greenlick. \n\n\n\n• Opio (5 min): Opio is another survivor of the Lord’s Resistance Army civil war in northern Uganda who\, like Connie Amongi\, was also rescued by Bright Kids Uganda. Directed by Pauline Greenlick. \n\n\n\n• She’s Great! (8 min): A young woman tries her best to stay present and keep burnout at bay. This film takes several film genres\, from supernatural mysteries to rom coms\, and combines them to form a modern-day fairytale about a group of high school Latin American history students who quickly regret their decision to not fully appreciate the Liberator of Brazil. \n\n\n\nFishel and Swanson’s film will have its Pittsburgh premiere at The Lindsay on Thursday\, April 16\, at 7 p.m. The 83-minute screening will be immediately followed by a filmmaker Q&A. Tickets are free\, and we recommend RSVPing via the sign-up form below due to space limitations. \n\n\n\n“The Haunting of Prince Dom Pedro is a fun\, quirky movie that is very entertaining\,” says Fishel. “It has been described as a Scooby-Doo movie without the big dog.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDom Pedro was a Portuguese prince who became Brazil’s first ruler in the early 19th century. Fishel\, a longtime staple of this region’s film industry\, conceived of The Haunting of Prince Dom Pedro after thinking about the worst-case scenario if high school students ignored their teacher’s plea to take their studies seriously. \n\n\n\nThat initial idea evolved into a family-friendly romp that blends comedy\, mystery\, light horror\, romance\, teen shenanigans\, martial arts\, crime capers\, historical drama\, musicals—and even Bigfoot. \n\n\n\nFilming took place across six Western Pennsylvania counties and one Ohio county. Dom Pedro was edited by Jamie Lockhart\, of Bellevue\, and stars Rachel O’Day\, of Saltsburg\, and Madeline Schlichter\, of Indiana Township\, as high-schoolers “Jayden and Kayden.” \n\n\n\nOne particularly unique aspect of Dom Pedro‘s production was its designation as a SAG-AFTRA micro-budget feature. That program is available to projects made for $20\,000 or less\, and it gave Fishel and company the green light to increase the scope of their modestly budgeted endeavor. \n\n\n\n“There were more than 160 people as part of the cast and crew\, and more than 150 of them appeared in front of the camera\,” explains Fishel. “That’s a huge number for a locally filmed indie.” \n\n\n\nThere are so many familiar places and faces in Dom Pedro that filmgoers will likely recognize at least one location or actor.
