SUMMARY:Holiday Classics at The Lindsay
DESCRIPTION:Season’s greetings! Is it ever too early to start spreading holiday cheer? \n\n\n\nGet ready for two weeks of timeless stories about togetherness\, generosity and keeping your tongue away from frozen poles. \n\n\n\nThe Lindsay will have many flavors of holiday classics on tap this year. Board The Polar Express\, get into shenanigans with Ralphie Parker in A Christmas Story\, hang out with Will Ferrell’s oversized Christmas helper in Elf or join the Griswolds for National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation!  \n\n\n\nInterested in revisiting Hollywood’s Golden Age? Look no further than the trifecta of It’s a Wonderful Life\, White Christmas and We’re No Angels! Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Dec. 21\, which is when we’ll have a sensory friendly Elf screening and Burgh Bus Christmas Vacation event. Tickets are on sale for every holiday classic screening at the links below. We hope to see you at the Theater during the most wonderful time of the year! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s a Wonderful Life\n\n\n\nPG | 2h 10min | Drama\, Fantasy\, Romance\n\n\n\nDirector: Frank Capra\n\n\n\nStars: James Stewart\, Donna Reed\, Lionel Barrymore\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow many of us can remember a holiday season without It’s a Wonderful Life? That’s a testament to the enduring universality of this beautiful drama about a businessman (Indiana\, Pa.\, native James Stewart) seeing what the world would look like without him. \n\n\n\nAlmost 80 years later\, It’s a Wonderful Life remains “a genuine American classic\,” writes The Guardian. Even in 1946\, critics like The Hollywood Reporter‘s Jack D. Grant realized that director Frank Capra had made a film in which “everyone who sees it will agree that it’s wonderful entertainment.” \n\n\n\n“His direction of the individual characterizations delivered is also distinctively his\, and the performances\, from the starring roles of James Stewart and Donna Reed down to the smallest bit\, are magnificent. When Capra is at his best\, no one can top him.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for It’s a Wonderful Life\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElf\n\n\n\nPG | 1h 37min | Comedy\n\n\n\nDirector: Jon Favreau\n\n\n\nStars: Will Ferrell\, James Caan\, Zooey Deschanel\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVery little will get you in the holiday spirit faster than Elf. Director Jon Favreau’s 2003 comedy follows Buddy (Will Ferrell)\, a human raised among Santa’s elves who leaves the North Pole to find his father (James Caan) and remind jaded New Yorkers about the true meaning of Christmas. \n\n\n\nElf is an “irresistibly goofy Christmas comedy” that “takes bold pleasure in unabashed silliness\,” raves Salon. As the New York Post playfully declares: “Yule love it.” \n\n\n\n“Elf is a pleasantly old-fashioned\, gee-whillikers Yuletide confection…Ferrell’s manic\, overgrown-kid energy sweeps all before it\, announcing him as a major leading-man talent who can charm as well as amuse.”The Lindsay will be holding a sensory-friendly Elf screening on Saturday\, Dec. 21\, at 10 a.m. We encourage those who are interested in attending this screening to purchase tickets in advance. \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for Elf\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNational Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation\n\n\n\nPG-13 | 1h 37min | Comedy \n\n\n\nDirector: Jeremiah S. Chechick\n\n\n\nStars: Chevy Chase\, Bevery D’Angelo\, Juliette Lewis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho could have guessed that Clark Griswold’s (Chevy Chase) grand vision for the perfect Christmas was destined to go delightfully haywire? Well\, just everybody going into National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation who had spent the 1980s laughing along with the Griswolds’ hapless antics. \n\n\n\nChristmas Vacation “may be the only modern Christmas comedy which really stands up to repeat viewings\,” declares Time Out. The third Vacation film finds “Chevy Chase and brood doing what they do best\,” praises Variety. \n\n\n\n“If it doesn’t make you at least giggle\,” adds Empire\, “then you clearly don’t understand the true meaning of the festive season—which is of course combustible toilets and electrified cats.”The Lindsay is collaborating with The Burgh Bus on a Dec. 21 Holiday Ride that will begin with a 6:30 p.m. Burgh Bus tour and culminate in a 7:30 p.m. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation screening. Don’t miss out! \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for Christmas Vacation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re No Angels\n\n\n\nNR | 1h 46min | Comedy\, Caper\n\n\n\nDirector: Michael Curtiz\n\n\n\nStars: Humphrey Bogart\, Peter Ustinov\, Aldo Ray\n\n\n\nSINGLE SCREENING on Sunday\, Dec. 15\, at 1 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club returns to The Lindsay for a one-time showing of We’re No Angels\, the 1955 screwball comedy about three escaped convicts who are unexpectedly moved to help a kind shopkeeper and his family. \n\n\n\nWe’re No Angels soars thanks to “Michael Curtiz’s directorial pacing and topflight performances from Humphrey Bogart\, Aldo Ray and Peter Ustinov\,” lauds Variety. This Broadway adaptation is an “assured\, entertaining black comedy” that feels “both warm and sophisticated\,” writes TV Guide. \n\n\n\nBe sure you head over to The Lindsay early on Sunday\, Dec. 15\, for a special introduction from Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club President Wendy Whittick. \n\n\n\n\nTickets for We’re No Angels\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhite Christmas\n\n\n\nNR | 2h 5min | Musical\, Comedy\, Romance\n\n\n\nDirector: Michael Curtiz\n\n\n\nStars: Bing Crosby\, Rosemary Clooney\, Danny Kaye\n\n\n\nLIMITED SCREENINGS: Sunday\, Dec. 15\, at 3:30 p.m. & Monday\, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFathom Events is bringing White Christmas back to theaters for its 70th anniversary! This lavish musical stars Bing Crosby\, Danny Kaye\, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen as two pairs of traveling performers who combine their talents to save a Vermont inn from closing. \n\n\n\n“With wit\, exuberance\, and some show-stopping hits\, White Christmas is a cracking musical\,” raves BBC. This film is a “cosy crowd-pleaser” with “sumptuous production values\,” commends Total Film. “This was the Mamma Mia! of its day\, a nostalgic blast of popular Irving Berlin show-tunes gift-wrapped in new-fangled VistaVision.” \n\n\n\nPittsburgh Classic Movie Club Vice President Deann Davis will provide a special introduction prior to the Dec. 15 screening. \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for White Christmas\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Christmas Story\n\n\n\nPG | 1h 33min | Comedy\, Family\n\n\n\nDirector: Bob Clark\n\n\n\nStars: Peter Billingsley\, Melinda Dillon\, Darren McGavin\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll that Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun. A Christmas Story warm-heartedly chronicles his many efforts to convince the many adults in his life—including Santa—to get him a gift that keeps on giving. \n\n\n\nThis 1983 holiday comedy contains “a treasure chest of familiar moments that almost every kid—even those who don’t celebrate Christmas—can relate to\,” writes IGN. A Christmas Story is “family fare to savor” and simply “a joy to the world\,” declares The Washington Post.”If you’re a Christmas holdout\, a true believer who still hears reindeer on the roof\, and even on an unseasonably warm Christmas Eve holds out hope of waking to a yard full of snow and branches coated like velvet antlers\, then A Christmas Story is for you.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for A Christmas Story\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Polar Express\n\n\n\nG | 1h 40min | Animated\, Adventure\n\n\n\nDirector: Robert Zemeckis\n\n\n\nStars: Tom Hanks\, Peter Scolari\, Nona Gaye\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll aboard The Polar Express! This adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s 1985 children’s book follows a young boy who on Christmas Eve is whisked away for a magical train ride to the North Pole. His unexpected adventure teaches him important lessons about friendship\, bravery and the spirit of Christmas. \n\n\n\nThe Polar Express “is a runaway thrill” full of “rambunctious comedy…which buttresses the story’s sage wisdom\,” writes The Hollywood Reporter. Director Robert Zemeckis’ technical marvel “has the quality of a lot of lasting children’s entertainment\,” Roger Ebert wrote in his 2004 review. \n\n\n\n“The Polar Express is a movie for more than one season; it will become a perennial\, shared by the generations…The conductor tells Hero Boy he thinks he really should get on the train\, and I have the same advice for you.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for The Polar Express

SUMMARY:House of Tears World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s next Emerging Filmmakers Showcase\, House of Tears\, is a Western Pennsylvania-filmed murder mystery inspired by the classic board game Clue. \n\n\n\nHouse of Tears was written and directed by Bethel Park native Josh Poe. It’s set during a dinner party hosted by famous chocolate maker Vincent Loren (WTAE-TV reporter Sheldon Ingram). The 11 guests gathered at this secluded home are quickly forced to confront an unknown enemy seemingly intent on killing everyone in attendance. \n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay’s House of Tears screening will take place on Thursday\, Dec. 12\, at 7 p.m. This free event will also include a Q&A with Poe and other members of the filmmaking team. House of Tears is already proving to be a particularly popular Emerging Filmmakers Showcase\, so anyone interested in checking this film out should RSVP asap. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“I wanted to premiere the movie close to home and always wanted to use The Lindsay for its classic theater feel\,” says Poe\, 25\, a Denison University graduate with a degree in commerce\, media and the arts. House of Tears began as a suggestion by a friend of Poe’s to make a short film involving a house. \n\n\n\n“I always loved the board game and movie Clue\,” says Poe. “So for my first foray into the horror genre\, I decided that I wanted to make a movie similar to that film\, but more horror-based.” \n\n\n\nThat initial idea eventually evolved into a script for a feature-length murder mystery. Poe and company filmed over the course of 14 days in two different homes\, including one belonging to the grandfather of a House of Tears crew member. \n\n\n\n“Since we wrapped in late winter\, we have been basically working on something every day for this film\,” says Poe. “Putting together this movie has been a ton of fun\, and I am so proud of each and everyone that helped us along the way because it is truly amazing to see the work pay off.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to Ingram\, House of Tears’ expansive cast also includes Payton Léger\, Delaney Hathaway\, Charles Mengine\, Shane Callahan\, Kelsey Rhea\, Duncan Jameson\, Amaru Williams\, Molly McDowell\, Spencer Samson\, Chris Storms\, David Nackman and Robert Scott.

SUMMARY:KHAF World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nPittsburgh produces quite a bit of independently made horror films. Rarely\, though\, do those cinematic endeavors venture into folk horror territory. \n\n\n\nFor the uninitiated\, “folk horror” is a cinematic sub-genre known for isolated environments\, an emphasis on nature\, and utilizing real or fictional folklore to invoke terror and dread. That’s exactly what Jess Kaeden was aspiring for with KHAF\, her locally filmed feature about a Pennsylvania farm family being terrorized by a demon hellbent on obtaining their firstborn child. \n\n\n\nKHAF will have its world premiere on Thursday\, Nov. 21\, at 7 p.m. as the next entry in the The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s ongoing Emerging Filmmakers Showcase series. That screening will be immediately followed by a Q&A with writer-director Kaeden; co-writers Jason Burke and Justen Kimball; and other members of the KHAF filmmaking team. \n\n\n\n\nTickets are free\, but RSVPs are encouraged in advance due to space limitations. \n\n\n\n“What makes KHAF sort of different from anything that anybody’s doing around here is that it’s more folk horror\,” says Kaeden\, the founder of locally based Spinning Web Productions. “The A24 atmosphere and aesthetic\, you don’t really see that around here.” \n\n\n\nKHAF stars a slew of recognizable local talent\, including Samantha Ainsworth\, Hattie Baier\, Brian Ceponis\, Kenneth Pierce and David Ogrodowski. The film was produced by\, among others\, Mike Ancas (Day of the Dead) and Wes Fisher (Children as Giants). \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAinsworth plays Vera Darling\, who is forced to confront her family’s dark past that’s tied to an ancient cult and child-sacrifice rituals in service of Moloch\, an ancient Carthaginian demon. Kaeden said she drew inspiration for KHAF from recent Hollywood folk horror hits like Robert Eggers’ The Witch and Ari Aster’s Midsommar. \n\n\n\nShe wants to make sure everyone interested in attending the KHAF world premiere knows that her film deals with “deep psychological traumas.”  \n\n\n\nKaeden is a 24-year-old Connellsville native and graduate of the George A. Romero Filmmaking Program. KHAF was shot during summer and fall 2022 largely on farmland in Belle Vernon. Kaeden also set her film in the Keystone State because “I didn’t want to make a film out of Pennsylvania and call it somewhere else.” \n\n\n\n\nShe can’t wait for this unique example of Western Pennsylvania-filmed folk horror to debut next week at The Lindsay. \n\n\n\n“We’re all about supporting independent filmmakers\,” Kaeden says. “Pennsylvania is very centered around independent filmmakers\, but it’s very special to have a venue that has these Emerging Filmmaker Showcases. As an independent filmmaker\, I feel very honored.”

The actors are at the top of their game in this sophisticated murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. (Adult content: violence) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSmall Town Universe\n\n\n\nSunday\, November 17 @ 4:00 P.M. – Pennsylvania Premiere\n\n\n\nSmall Town Universe is a riveting documentary that paints an intimate portrait of life in Green Bank\, West Virginia\, home to the world’s most sensitive radio telescope and the only U.S. town that bans Wi-Fi and cell phones. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with some of the film’s subjects. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBob Trevino Likes It\n\n\n\nSunday\, November 17 @ 7:00 P.M. – Pennsylvania Premiere\n\n\n\nBob Trevino Likes It won the 2024 SXSW film festival’s narrative feature competition. Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria) and John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge!) star in this clever comedy about an upbeat young woman who forges an unlikely friendship with a man who has the exact same name as her deadbeat father.

SUMMARY:Queering the Documentary: An Evening with Filmmaker Connor Lee O’Keefe
DESCRIPTION:The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center will introduce regional cinephiles to the singular filmmaking talent of Connor Lee O’Keefe later this month. \n\n\n\nO’Keefe is a nonfiction filmmaker\, artist and teacher who uses a queer lens to shape the realities captured in his films. He’s currently in residence as this semester’s Visiting Documentary Filmmaker at Robert Morris University. \n\n\n\nHe’ll be at The Lindsay on Thursday\, Nov. 7\, at 7 p.m. to share five of his documentary shorts as part of a specially curated Queering the Documentary program. Those screenings will be followed by a Q&A with O’Keefe. Tickets to this event are free\, but RSVPs are encouraged in advance due to space limitations. \n\n\n\n\nSome of O’Keefe’s films that will be screened on Nov. 7 include Our Transition\, which explores O’Keefe’s gender transition from his parents’ perspective; Imagine a Body\, an essay film on the spiritual nature of hormone replacement therapy for transgender men that premiered in 2022 as part of the The New Yorker Documentary Series; and No More Longing\, an immersive portrait of Brazilian musician Jaime Jobim that premiered at SFFilm in San Francisco. \n\n\n\n\n“It is a pleasure to work with our Visiting Documentary Filmmaker each fall semester\,” says Jen Stratakis\, RMU’s Arts & Humanities’ media outreach coordinator. “I have the privilege of helping each one connect with the RMU student body and greater Pittsburgh film community to share their work in a meaningful way. This semester\, Connor Lee O’Keefe brings his beautiful take on storytelling to our campus and our town. He is eloquent and his films are inspiring.”   \n\n\n\nThis is the second year in a row that The Lindsay will be hosting a Robert Morris Visiting Documentary Filmmaker’s public showcase. \n\n\n\n\n“I’m honored to have been able to continue refining my work as an artist with RMU and to have an opportunity to participate in fruitful dialogue with audiences at The Lindsay\,” says O’Keefe. “We need independent theaters to keep this art form doing what it does best—and that’s bringing people together.” \n\n\n\nRMU’s Visiting Documentary Filmmaker program is a 15-week residency that requires participants to teach a documentary introduction class\, create and share their work\, and actively engage with the RMU faculty\, student body and general community. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“We need queer and trans perspectives now more than ever\,” says O’Keefe. “I hope these films immerse you into a space that allows you to wonder\, heal and grow.”

SUMMARY:Strong Mind Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Ninety percent of the public thinks America is having a mental health crisis\, according to the American Psychological Association. \n\n\n\nThis crisis includes anxiety\, depression\, eating disorders and much more\, says Benjamin Carlucci\, an award-winning filmmaker and Creative Director at the Strong Mind Project\, a local mental health awareness nonprofit. On Sunday\, Oct. 20\, from 5:30 to 9 p.m.\, The Lindsay will host the inaugural Strong Mind Showcase. \n\n\n\nThis free event features a pre-screening panel discussion with mental health professionals and advocates. Afterward\, two hours of short films\, separated by an intermission\, aim to promote empathy\, insight and understanding in the mental health space. \n\n\n\n“The Strong Mind Project is dedicated to cultivating conversations and raising awareness in the mental health space\,” says Carlucci\, a Squirrel Hill resident. “Our upcoming showcase will bring together talented artists with mental health professionals and advocates for the theme of ‘making the invisible\, visible.’” \n\n\n\nActivities begin at 5:45 p.m. with a panel discussion featuring Matt Walsh\, Oasis Mental Health’s co-founder and chief clinical officer; Listen Lucy CEO Jordan Corcoran; and artist Hayden Caico\, whose short film\, The Creature and Me\, will screen at the festival. \n\n\n\nFilm selections\, starting at 6:45 p.m.\, will share the best of more than 2\,000 submissions from 106 countries. An awards presentation will follow. \n\n\n\n“We are delighted to bring together so many diverse voices under one event\,” continues Carlucci. “The Strong Mind Showcase is more than just a film festival—it’s a platform for artists to shine a light on mental health challenges\, and for the rest of us to shine a light on the artists sparking crucial conversations through storytelling.” \n\n\n\nTickets are free\, but RSVPs are requested in advance to ensure seating for all. SUMMARY:Waltz World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s spooky October continues with the world premiere of an exciting new horror-thriller that was made right here in Western Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\n\nWaltz is a Halloween-friendly film about a desperate woman whose attempt to make ends meet results in the fight of her life. This next entry in The Lindsay’s ongoing Emerging Filmmakers Showcase series is set for Thursday\, Oct. 17\, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free\, but we encourage RSVPs in advance—especially for an event like this\, that’s already at half capacity! \n\n\n\nA Q&A directly following the screening will feature writer-director Joshua Maley\, a local filmmaker and founder of Monaca-based Grimm Sleeper Productions; stars Hannah Keeley\, Hattie Baier and (Sewickley native) David Dietz; special effects “gore master” Jason Proakis; editor Holly Grayson; and director of photography Kevin Kukler. \n\n\n\nKeeley\, a United Kingdom native with international stage and film-acting experience\, takes center stage in Waltz. She plays Alice\, who begins selling erotic photos of herself online after losing her job. She gains a following—including one fan who quickly takes things too far.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The inspiration for Waltz came from my interest in what really makes a monster\,” says Maley.  “In a way\, we’re all monsters sometimes. We all do good and bad things\, and sometimes we do the bad things for a good reason\, or we do the good things for a bad reason.” \n\n\n\nMaley\, a Beaver County native\, attended Point Park University and Full Sail University in Florida before he founded Grimm Sleeper Productions in 2015. His first short\, the thriller 415\, earned four awards—including Audience Choice and Best Writing—at the Haunted Oaks Film Festival; was an official selection at the 2021 Moscow Gold Film Festival and the Bite Size Film Festival; and scored top awards at the Pittsburgh Moving Picture Festival’s 2023 Thriller Picture Show. \n\n\n\nThe trailer for Waltz received the Best Trailer Award at the 2023 Prodigy Film Fest. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWaltz is Maley’s first feature film\, and he always intended to premiere it at The Lindsay. \n\n\n\n“The experience of a cozy\, small-town theater just makes everything more enjoyable and feel less commercial\,” he says. “It was also important for me to screen my first feature close to home\, but in a central location easily accessible by my colleagues. The Lindsay checks all the boxes. The Emerging Filmmakers program is the frosting on an already tantalizing cake.” \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“We appreciate Joshua’s regard for The Lindsay and our Emerging Filmmakers Showcase\,” says Theater CEO Carolina Thor. “The Lindsay is committed to supporting the region’s filmmaking industry and providing the opportunities for local audiences to share in the excitement of new films\, like Waltz.”

SUMMARY:Grandpa and Shorty
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nA grandfather and granddaughter forge a special connection in Grandpa and Shorty\, the next screening in The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase series. \n\n\n\n\nGrandpa and Shorty is a 51-minute drama about a military family who begins to repair fractured relationships by bonding over shared values. It hails from Pittsburgh-based White Ball Productions\, which was co-founded by Grandpa and Shorty director Jeff Balmert and writer John Rokosz. The goal of Grandpa and Shorty was always “to highlight the emotions and drama that military families struggle with everyday\,” explains Rokosz. \n\n\n\nThe Thursday\, Sept. 26\, screening starts at 7:30 p.m. with opening remarks by combat veteran and bestselling author Sean Parnell. The film will be immediately followed by a Q&A with Balmert and Rokosz. Tickets are free\, but guests are encouraged to RSVP in advance via The Lindsay’s website to ensure seating for all. \n\n\n\n\n“With a story aimed at bringing soldiers and civilians together\, we’re delighted to work with The Lindsay Theater to share this message free of charge with our hometown\,” says Rokosz. “We recognize the opportunities that The Lindsay Theater has given to emerging filmmakers in Pittsburgh and honor the contributions they’ve made to our beloved Pittsburgh community at large.” \n\n\n\nThis Pittsburgh-filmed project follows Al Androwski\, a 70-year-old Army veteran and grandfather (Howard Elson) whose wife recently died and whose estranged son (Curtis Caldwell) is currently serving as a medevac pilot in Afghanistan. Al is thrown for a loop when his daughter-in-law (Se Marie Volk) unexpectedly needs him to babysit his granddaughter (Tori Flanders). \n\n\n\nBalmert is a Duquesne University and Carnegie Mellon University graduate\, veteran filmmaker and experienced voiceover artist. Rokosz is a fellow Duquesne alumnus and classically trained musician who both composed and performed Grandpa and Shorty’s score. \n\n\n\n\n“Producing this film has been a 6-year labor of love\,” Rokosz continues. “I’m grateful for our team’s dedication\, and for our united belief in the film’s authentic message of faith\, family and duty. We can’t wait to share this story with our hometown\, the world at large\, and especially all active and veteran military families who we strive to honor through this film.”

SUMMARY:Go to the People
DESCRIPTION:This event is SOLD OUT. \n\n\n\nFor the past 32 years\, Dr. Jim Withers has walked the streets and crawled under the bridges of Pittsburgh by night to provide medical care to the city’s homeless people. \n\n\n\nHis remarkable story is told in producer-writer-director Jeff Sewald’s documentary\, Go to the People\, which will be screened for free on Thursday\, Aug. 22\, at 7:30 p.m.\, as part of The Lindsay’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase. The 60-minute film will be followed by a Q&A with Sewald and Dr. Withers. \n\n\n\n\nNamed one of CNN’s Top 10 Heroes in 2015\, Withers\, an internist\, was inspired by childhood memories of accompanying his father\, a family physician\, on house calls\, and his mother\, a nurse\, on home-care visits.  \n\n\n\n“It was normal in my family to care. And my parents didn’t just talk about it; they put caring into action\,” he told Pittsburgh Quarterly. “Seeing that gave me a sense of purpose\, and it was during those years that I decided to become a doctor.” \n\n\n\n\nWhen he first began his nighttime rounds\, with a formerly homeless man as his guide\, “Dr. Jim\,” dressed like a homeless person and gained acceptance on the streets\, under the bridges\, and in homeless encampments. Before long\, his dedication and compassion inspired others to join him in his mission. The program\, called Operation Safety Net\, is now recognized as one of the nation’s first full-time “street medicine” concerns\, and it continues to set the standard for this unique form of health care. \n\n\n\n\n“When I decided to make this film\, Jim told me that I would be forever changed by it\, and he was right\,” said Jeff Sewald\, an award-winning filmmaker and writer. “I learned from him that every interaction with homeless people must begin by listening to their concerns and\, sometimes\, just hearing their stories.” \n\n\n\n“My work with people living on the streets came not so much from my sense that they needed me\, but that I needed them\,” said Dr. Withers. “I see pieces of myself in every homeless person that I meet\, and consider it a privilege to be welcomed into their camps to connect with them as human beings.” \n\n\n\n\nShowcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, present different artistic voices and encourage exchanges between local filmmakers and the public. \n\n\n\nWhile admission is free to all Emerging Filmmakers Showcase events\, those attending are asked to RSVP at The Lindsay’s ticketing page to ensure seating for all.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Salt Cellar Films
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s next Emerging Filmmakers Showcase will be centered around an exciting new production company with big plans for Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNicholas Geisler and Bennett Cordon—co-founders of Los Angeles-based Salt Cellar Productions—will be at The Lindsay on Thursday\, Aug. 15\, at 7:30 p.m. to screen three diverse and compelling short films\, participate in a Q&A\, and reveal exclusive details about the feature film Salt Cellar plans to shoot throughout Pittsburgh next year. This Showcase is a free event\, but guests will need to RSVP in advance due to space limitations. \n\n\n\n“Salt Cellar is dedicated to telling smart\, entertaining\, and humanist stories exploring the interplay between individuals\, technology and their communities\,” says Geisler. “We can’t wait to bring those stories to Pittsburgh’s vibrant independent film scene!” \n\n\n\nThe three films screening at The Lindsay\, all produced by Geisler and Cordon\, are: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n• When You Became Us\, a 10-minute sci-fi comedy written and directed by Geisler. The film follows a couple struggling to remain on the same page in a world where technology can merge our minds with the internet—and each other. The feature film that Salt Cellar intends to shoot in Pittsburgh is a fleshed-out version of When You Became Us that’s also set in this region. \n\n\n\n• Come As You Are\, a 16-minute drama chronicling the experiences of a young gay man navigating new and old relationships following a life-changing diagnosis. \n\n\n\n• Shut Up\, Jack\, a 9-minute comedy that premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival. The film takes place at a house party in which the titular Jack commits an embarrassing faux pas and becomes racked with anxiety. \n\n\n\nThe Salt Cellar duo both believe in\, as Cordon put it\, the importance of “forging community and conversation” through their work.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Salt Cellar imbues every project with a boundless passion for storytelling\,” says Geisler. “We’ve found a similar spirit and love for film at the Lindsay Theater.” \n\n\n\n\n\nAdds Cordon: “We bring stories to life that tackle a spectrum of perspectives and moments of human connection. As we share the power of cinema with a community of film lovers\, we hope to inspire filmmakers to create beauty in unpredictable futures.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmerging Filmmakers Showcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, present different artistic voices and encourage exchanges between these filmmakers and audiences. This program is partially funded by The Pittsburgh Foundation and always free to the public.

SUMMARY:Twisters Talk with Local Meteorologists
DESCRIPTION:The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center has recruited two of Pittsburgh’s favorite local media personalities—and foremost weather experts—to help enhance guests’ enjoyment of Twisters. \n\n\n\nWPXI’s Scott Harbaugh and KDKA’s Ron Smiley will be at the Theater on Friday\, July 26\, at 7 p.m. for a special conversation tied to Twisters. Our guests are welcome to stick around after the Theater’s 4:30 p.m. Twisters showing or head over before the 7:30 p.m. screening to catch this free program headlined by two of this region’s most accomplished meteorologists. Patrons who have already seen Twisters are also welcome to attend this exclusive event.  \n\n\n\nHarbaugh and Smiley will chat for 20-25 minutes about the art of meteorology\, why the Pittsburgh area has seen so many tornadoes already this summer\, and what the original 1996 Twister got right (and wrong) about one of nature’s most fascinating and destructive weather phenomena. \n\n\n\n“Twister was out right when I was in college\,” says Smiley. “It wasn’t like anything we had ever seen before. On top of that\, the science was accurate! I think that’s what lots of us really appreciate.” \n\n\n\nBoth he and Harbaugh can’t wait to see what Hollywood came up with for Twisters\, which is already garnering strong early reviews. Entertainment Weekly recently declared that Twisters “is just about as good as a summer movie gets.” \n\n\n\n“I think the movie looks amazing!” says Harbaugh. “The technology in it looks phenomenal. It’s the kind of movie where you’re not going to be able to sit back the entire time.” \n\n\n\nBoth Harbaugh and Smiley are excited about this rare in-person opportunity to connect with their loyal viewers—and reconnect with each other. \n\n\n\n“Scott and myself\, we really get along\,” Smiley says. “It’s going to be fun hanging with him\, talking science\, weather and some of the challenges we go through forecasting in Western Pennsylvania.” \n\n\n\nAdds Harbaugh: “Any time I get to hang out with someone in town who does the same thing as me\, it’s always a good time. I’m looking forward to hanging out with Ron and catching up. It’s nice to do something face to face for once!”

SUMMARY:Presentation by Local Motorcyle Expert for The Bikeriders
DESCRIPTION:Note: This event was originally scheduled for Friday\, June 21.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAnyone can watch The Bikeriders at The Lindsay starting June 21. Plus\, folks heading to the Theater the following Friday will also get to hear from a true motorcycle expert. \n\n\n\nMoviegoers who are either leaving The Lindsay’s 4:30 p.m. showing of The Bikeriders or getting ready to catch the full-throttle drama at 7:30 p.m. will have the chance to meet Mike Seate\, a Sewickley resident\, veteran motorcycle journalist\, and Cafe Racer magazine’s editor and publisher. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeate will be on hand at 6:45 p.m. on June 28 for a 30-minute presentation about motorcycle culture\, his knowledge of The Bikeriders inspiration Danny Lyon\, and to show off his 1960 Norton Dominator — a popular\, high-performance street bike imported from the United Kingdom — at The Lindsay. \n\n\n\n“Danny Lyon’s The Bikeriders is a seminal work of 20th-century photojournalism that’s respected by motorcyclists around the world\,” says Seate. “That his work inspired a Hollywood movie is a testament to the enduring quality of his photos.” \n\n\n\nThis Seate talk is the perfect companion to The Bikeriders\, writer-director Jeff Nichols’ sweeping tale of loyalty and love centered around a Midwestern motorcycle club. The captivating summer action-drama stars Oscar nominees Austin Butler (Elvis)\, Tom Hardy (The Revenant) and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) alongside a stacked cast that also includes Jodie Comer (Killing Eve)\, Mike Faist (Challengers)\, Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) and Boyd Holbrook (Logan). \n\n\n\nSeate’s presentation will focus on the period of motorcycle history depicted in The Bikeriders and Lyon’s time documenting members of the real-life Outlaws Motorcycle Club that inspired Nichols’ fictional story. Friday’s talk will also include historical items and memorabilia provided by Seate\, along with the chance to purchase his book\, Two Wheels on Two Reels. \n\n\n\nCafe racers originated in the 1960s as British sport and speed bikes favored by urban “rockers” who used the stripped-down motorcycles to sprint from cafe to cafe. Seate has spent years studying and writing about cafe racers and the folks who love them\, even traveling to the U.K. and absorbing information that he has been sharing with local motorcycle enthusiasts ever since. He also hosted 56 episodes of the Discovery series “Cafe Racer\,” which recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of when filming wrapped on its final season. \n\n\n\nWhether you love motorcycles or just want to watch one of summer 2024’s most anticipated new releases\, come on down to The Lindsay for The Bikeriders and the rare opportunity to hang out with a local guy who knows a lot about the world of cafe racers.

SUMMARY:Theatrical Premiere for Judge Not
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nA single mom. An unexpected pregnancy. Snarky church-hall chatter. A tough decision. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThat’s the drama shared in Judge Not\, the next Emerging Filmmakers Showcase event on Thursday\, June 13\, at 7 p.m. at The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center. \n\n\n\nBlanket Hill Productions\, based in Kittanning\, tackles how men and women grapple with their faith when facing major life decisions in this full-length feature (1 hr 50 min). Director Aaron Dunbar\, director of photography Travis Culley and other members of the team will host a Q&A session after the free screening. While the screening is free\, RSVPs are requested to ensure seating for all; the popular Showcase programming often reaches capacity. \n\n\n\nDunbar has a record of honors at the Chautauqua and Indie Gathering international film festivals\, Queen City Film Festival and CARE Awards.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDunbar\, a Clarion University grad and lifelong avid writer\, ventured into filmmaking after his second novel about a terminally ill girl’s desire to see Bigfoot (A Wish for Giants) fell into the hands of the cast for Finding Bigfoot and comedian Bobcat Goldthwailt. They encouraged Dunbar to turn the book into a movie\, and\, he says\, “Once I saw one of my stories on the big screen\, I knew I had to make more.” \n\n\n\nWhile Dunbar produced previous films\, Judge Not is the first developed by Blanket Hill Productions\, a club-based operation. Its principals developed the club—with committees dedicated to crew\, casting\, fundraising and scripting—to employ collective creativity and engage the expertise of members for faith-based filmmaking and story-telling.   \n\n\n\nThe multitude of committee voices has not slowed progress\, Dunbar says. Filmmakers share that Judge Not was shot in Kittanning over a 10-day stretch in August through the efforts of professional actors\, club members and local theater talents; with only one shoot in October to capture a large group scene. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Judge Not exemplifies the power of independent filmmaking\, demonstrating how dedicated individuals can create impactful stories\,” says Culley. “Join us at Blanket Hill Productions Film Club to pursue your cinema dreams and share your voice\, thanks to the support of venues like the Lindsay Theater.”

SUMMARY:Pillow Talk co-presented by the Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\n\n\n\nSpicy 1950s rom-com Pillow Talk\, starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson\, will screen Tuesday\, June 11\, at 7:30 p.m.\, in partnership with the Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay stars as Jan\, an interior decorator\, with Hudson as Brad\, a composer and playboy\, who share a telephone party line and a mutual dislike—until Brad sees Jan in person and hatches a plan to win her heart. The film was nominated for five Oscars and won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay. \n\n\n\n“Pillow Talk is a funny\, heartwarming film that harkens back to the premise of the original screwball comedies\, specifically a hilarious battle of the sexes\,” says Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club president Wendy Whittick\, who will introduce the picture. “This film revitalized the careers of Hudson and Day\, recasting him as a comic actor and giving her a sexier image. It was such a success that they were paired in two subsequent films.” \n\n\n\nThe film topped the U.S. box office for seven consecutive weeks\, and grossed nearly $19 million\, then considered a huge amount. It was named to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2009\, recognized for its cultural\, historic and aesthetic significance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPillow Talk is “one of the most lively and up-to-date comedy-romances of the year\,” said The New York Times in its original 1959 review. “It is really the clever witty screenplay that accounts for much of the sparkle in this film. With a CinemaScope screen to play on\, (the screenwriters) and director Michael Gordon have much fun. And that fun is transmitted to the audience in an easy and generous flow of ingeniously graphic situations and nimble repartee.” \n\n\n\nTickets are on sale now!

Romero’s gut-chomping\, genre-defining sequel to Night of the Living Dead premiered April 12\, 1979 at the Gateway Theater in downtown Pittsburgh and is rarely seen on movie screens. The plot follows two Philadelphia S.W.A.T. team members\, a traffic reporter\, and his television executive girlfriend seek refuge from a zombie epidemic in a secluded shopping mall  \n\n\n\nThe late critic Roger Ebert gave the movie four out of four stars and proclaimed it one of the best horror films ever made. Empire named it one of the 500 Greatest Movies of all Time in a 2008 survey. \n\n\n\nThe film also launched the career of makeup and special effects artist Tom Savini\, a Pittsburgh native who went on to work on classic horror films such as Friday the 13th parts 1 and 4\, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.

SUMMARY:Freedom House Ambulance: The FIRST Responders
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nThey were truly the first responders. In 1967\, Pittsburgh produced America’s first EMT service: Freedom House Ambulance. This groundbreaking work\, performed solely by Black men and women from the Hill District\, became the basis for all paramedic training in the country.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheir story is told in the Mid-Atlantic Emmy-winning film Freedom House Ambulance: The FIRST Responders\, produced by Annette Banks of WQED-TV\, and screening Thursday\, March 28\, at 7 p.m.\, as part of The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase.  \n\n\n\nThe free showcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, are designed to accelerate filmmakers’ exposure and encourage exchanges between local artists and the public.  \n\n\n\n“The Lindsay is thrilled to present Freedom House Ambulance: The FIRST Responders as part of its Emerging Filmmakers Showcase\, helping to bring this piece of local history to the public’s attention\,” says Carolina Thor\, the Theater’s CEO. “We are particularly honored to have some of these trailblazers in attendance.” \n\n\n\nA Q&A after the screening will include filmmaker Banks\, Freedom House founder Phil Hallen\, and former Freedom House employee John Moon. \n\n\n\nUsing rare archival images\, the 28-minute documentary explores barriers faced by Freedom House Ambulance\, from Hallen’s story of inception to compelling reflections of the paramedic team\, stories of the world-renowned doctors who trained them\, and memories of the residents they served. \n\n\n\n“When I first learned about Freedom House Ambulance\, I knew that I had to tell this story\,” Banks says. “It was a little-known local story\, with major national impact. It was really exciting to meet some of the men and women from Freedom House who set the standard of pre-hospital care for our country\, and it was such a privilege to be able to produce the documentary to help spread the word about this amazing part of American history.” \n\n\n\nDespite the success of Freedom House Ambulance\, racism and power dynamics shut it down\, and faded its recognition in American history.  \n\n\n\nFreedom House: The FIRST Responders is “truly spectacular and a must-see for everyone in Pittsburgh and beyond\,” says the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research at the University of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\n“The Freedom House team of men and women completely transformed the field of emergency medicine\,” observes BikePGH. “The model they created was replicated all over the country … it’s the basis for the city-run ambulance service today. And the documentary lets us hear from the people who made their neighborhood safer\, those who were on the team themselves.” \n\n\n\nThis event is free to the public but RSVPs are requested so that seating for everyone can be ensured.

DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nPicture Proof\, a documentary film providing “an intimate look at the bonds that hold one West Virginia family together and the disease that threatens to tear them apart\,” will screen as part of The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShowcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, are designed to encourage exchanges between local filmmakers and the public\, and are free to all.  \n\n\n\n“Supporting the tri-state region’s film industry with Showcase events is part of The Lindsay’s mission\,” says Carolina Pais-Barreto Thor\, the Theater’s CEO. “We are especially honored to screen this documentary that brings an important perspective to an epidemic that sadly continues to ravage communities in Appalachia and beyond.” \n\n\n\nPicture Proof\, directed by Marshall University professor Tijah Bumgarner and University of Kentucky professor Jena Seiler\, follows Ashley from 2018 through 2021 as she struggles with addiction and gives birth to two children\, raising them with the help of her mother\, Debi Ellis. \n\n\n\nEllis will join the Q&A session with Bumgarner and Seiler after the 90-minute screening. \n\n\n\nAll three women have witnessed the impact of addiction in their own families; Bumgarner lost her father to an overdose. In making Picture Proof\, they chose to “push back against representations of addiction that too often perpetuate notions of personal failing and community apathy.”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe directors share: “When we met Ashley\, she was luminous\, charismatic\, generous\, and kind. We were struck by how open she was about her past: being in the ‘madness’ (active addiction) and her decision to leave her newborn daughter (Piper) in order to get treatment. \n\n\n\n“During our three years of filming\, we witnessed Ashley give birth to her second child\, Asher\, the deep bond between Ashley\, Debi and Piper\, and the remarkable strength of these women as they faced the precariousness of recovery\, the turbulence of relapse\, and the despair of addiction.” \n\n\n\n“Picture Proof is the most honest portrayal of addiction I have ever had the honor to witness\,” said Katie Dellamaggiore\, independent award-winning director and producer not involved with this project. “This beautifully moving film doesn’t offer straightforward answers but rather wades into complex territory with the utmost patience\, grace and humanity.” \n\n\n\nWhile admission is free\, those attending are asked to RSVP at The Lindsay’s ticketing page to ensure seating for all.

SUMMARY:We're All Going To Die: "A mostly funny documentary"
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nPreppers\, climate doomers\, bunker-dwellers … journalist and filmmaker Ben Knight explores the world of people preparing for total social and ecological collapse in the film We’re All Going To Die\, screening as part of The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShowcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, are designed to encourage exchanges between local filmmakers and the public\, and are free to all. Knight\, based in Berlin and an alumnus of Allegheny College in Meadville\, is currently touring the U.S. to promote the film. \n\n\n\n“Supporting filmmakers throughout the region with Showcase events is a core value at The Lindsay\,” says Carolina Pais-Barreto Thor\, the Theater’s CEO. “We are delighted to welcome this innovative filmmaker to our Theater and offer audiences the opportunity to explore this topic from a global perspective.” \n\n\n\nAsking the question “What would you do if the world was going to come to an end?” Knight embarks on a four-year journey from Berlin to London to Kansas to Norway to the Chicxulub crater in Mexico\, to learn from those convinced humanity will soon expire. \n\n\n\n“For anyone with eyes and ears and an internet connection\, it has become difficult to ignore the global crises encroaching on us\,” Knight says. “When I began this work\, I thought this would make for an amusing subject for a film\, but soon enough I realized that I shared many of these people’s fears myself. So the film has\, somewhat unwillingly\, become about my own confrontation with the world’s mortality.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStill\, We’re All Going To Die doesn’t ignore the humorous aspects of the topic\, as its tagline is “A mostly funny documentary.” \n\n\n\nOn the international festival circuit\, We’re All Going To Die was an Official Selection at the Košice International Film Festival in Slovakia; the Signs of the Night International Festival in Berlin; the Depth of Field\, Docs Without Borders and Nature Without Borders international film festivals; and a semi-finalist at both the 2023 Rotterdam Independent Film Festival and Palermo International Film Festival. \n\n\n\nKnight\, a journalist completing his first film\, has written for Deutsche Welle\, the Guardian\, the New Statesman\, Prospect\, der Freitag\, and others. His articles have covered a small German town that armed the world\, cults in Germany and illegal fishing in Sierra Leone\, among other topics. \n\n\n\nThe 93-minute screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Knight\, who will be joined by special guests Father Thomas Sorka (Moon Township\, PA) and Pat Hanavan\, of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\nFr. Sorka is the Rector of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in McKees Rocks\, a parish of the Orthodox Church in America. He’s a frequent speaker in parishes on various spiritual topics including parish revitalization\, growth and leadership\, and can also be heard regularly on Ancient Faith Radio’s “Ancient Faith Today Live” program. \n\n\n\nWorking as an innovative partner for local businesses\, Hanavan is a creative consultant and brand strategist who runs Super Deep Creative and Some Good Print. Pat is also a co-owner of Survival Ready in Ambridge\, PA\, a shop that aims to “inspire preparedness through trusted products and services.” \n\n\n\nWhile admission is free\, those attending are asked to RSVP at The Lindsay’s ticketing page to ensure seating for all.

SUMMARY:The TRIP Local Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis scary season\, Los Angeles-based director\, actor\, writer and producer Dean Jacobs will return to his native Pittsburgh for the local premiere of The TRIP\, a haunted house/slasher film honoring the legacy of late director George A. Romero as well as the city of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\nFeaturing local and nationally known actors\, the film screens Thursday\, Oct. 26\, at 7:30 p.m. as part of The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase. Showcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, are designed to encourage exchanges between local filmmakers and the public\, and are free to all. \n\n\n\n“Supporting local filmmakers with Showcase events is part of The Lindsay’s mission\,” says Carolina Pais-Barreto Thor\, The Lindsay’s CEO. “It is always such a thrill to see local filmmakers get a chance to show their work on the big screen\, and we are especially delighted to see Dean bring the results of his West Coast experience back home.” \n\n\n\nThe setting is a farmhouse in Westmoreland County’s Mount Pleasant\, where four childhood friends visit with plans for a relaxing weekend. But\, Jacobs says\, “the group soon finds out the house has something else planned.” \n\n\n\nRaised in McMurray and a 2002 graduate of Peters Township High School\, Jacobs began performing at the age of 10 for South Park Children’s Theatre\, Little Lake Theater and others.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter graduating from Indiana University of PA\, he landed some film roles\, including a small role in the locally shot feature\, A New York Heartbeat\, opposite future Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan. Afterward\, Jacobs decided to make the move to LA. \n\n\n\n“Filmmaking can and should be accessible for everyone with a desire to create\,” Jacobs says. “If you have a (phone) camera—and almost everyone does—that’s a good start. Tell a story. Give the audience something to invest in. \n\n\n\n“George Romero wrote the textbook on making a great independent film on a minimal budget. My intention was always to pay tribute to the city of Pittsburgh and\, in some small way\, hopefully honor the legacy of Romero in the process\,” Jacobs says. “The casting of Lori Cardille and John Amplas furthered that intention.” \n\n\n\nIn Romero’s third zombie film\, Day of the Dead\, Cardille played the lead role\, a tough-edged woman who had to fight off her rage-fueled male counterparts as well as zombies. She’s the daughter of “Chilly Billy” Cardille\, host of Pittsburgh’s Chiller Theater from the 1960s to the mid-1980s\, who played a small role in Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. \n\n\n\nAmplas\, in addition to his roles in  Romero films (Dawn of the Dead\, Day of the Dead\, Creepshow\, Martin and Knightriders)\, served as Romero’s casting director. Theater director at the Pittsburgh Playhouse\, Amplas taught theater at Point Park University for more than 20 years. \n\n\n\nOther stars of The TRIP include: Doug Bradley\, who played the lead role of Pinhead in Clive Barker’s Hellraiser\, Luke Edwards\, whose film credits include The Wizard\, Newsies\, Little Big League\, Jeepers Creepers II\, and Hannah Fierman\, a horror film veteran known for films and television shows including V/H/S\, Siren\, Creepshow\, Dynasty and Vampire Diaries. LA-based actor Evan Sloan and Salt Lake City-based Calvin Dittmore round out the main cast. \n\n\n\nDirector of photography Ethan Leisie is from Cranberry Township and supporting crew all live in the tri-state area. \n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers. Big Spring Spirits\, a community-centric craft distillery that is based in Bellefonte\, Pa. and operates a store in Sewickley\, will also be on hand with “The TRIP-inspired” signature cocktails available for purchase. \n\n\n\nWhile admission is free\, those attending are asked to RSVP at The Lindsay’s ticketing page to ensure seating for all. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick Me!

SUMMARY:Some Like It Hot co-presented by the Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center\, in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club\, will present a one-time screening of the legendary\, Oscar-nominated 1959 film Some Like It Hot on Sunday\, Oct. 15\, at 1 p.m. \n\n\n\nThe picture follows two musicians\, played by Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis\, who disguise themselves as women after witnessing a mob crime; Curtis’ character falls for the singer portrayed by Marilyn Monroe. Some Like It Hot\, directed by six-time Oscar winner Billy Wilder\, was made without approval from the Motion Picture Production Code (Hays Code) because of its LGBT themes. \n\n\n\nSince then\, the film’s reputation has grown\, and it is widely considered one of the greatest of all time. The Library of Congress selected it as one of the first 25 films for preservation in the National Film Registry\, and the American Film Institute voted it as the top comedy film on their list of AFI’s 100 Years…100 Laughs poll in 2000. \n\n\n\n“Wilder’s 1959 comedy is one of the enduring treasures of the movies\, a film of inspiration and meticulous craft\,” said the late critic Roger Ebert\, giving the film four out of four stars. “What a work of art and nature is Marilyn Monroe. She has the gift of appearing to hit on her lines of dialogue by happy inspiration\, and there are passages in Some Like It Hot where she and Tony Curtis exchange one-liners like hot potatoes.” \n\n\n\n“No one but Billy Wilder could bring you such a madcap comedy\,” says Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club President Wendy Whittick\, who will introduce the film. The club strives to promote and preserve classic films from Hollywood’s Golden Age with screenings personally curated by their expert members. The club is a haven for classic movie fans to share their love of classics with like-minded members.   \n\n\n\nTickets are on sale now. For this and other special events hosted at the Theater\, absolutely no ticket refunds are possible. For regular screenings\, the Theater is pleased to issue ticket “swaps” or refunds when contacted at least 24 hours in advance of the ticketed showtime.

SUMMARY:2023 Pittsburgh Moving Picture Festival: Thriller Picture Show
DESCRIPTION:Regular admission is $15 for all seats and all shows. An ALL-FESTIVAL PASS is available for $45.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Pittsburgh Moving Picture Festival: Thriller Picture Show is the cinematic celebration of the macabre\, the exciting\, the bizarre\, and the mysterious. \n\n\n\nFilm Screenings\n\n\n\nIn partnership with the George A. Romero Foundation (GARF)\, the Thriller Picture Show is also home to the Romero Lives commemorative event. Romero Lives 2023: The State of Nature showcases two George A. Romero classics that exemplify Hobbesian maxim that life in the state of nature can be “solitary\, poor\, nasty\, brutish\, and short”: Day of the Dead and the 50th anniversary of The Crazies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay of the Dead (1985\, 102 min)\n\n\n\nSaturday\, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m.\n\n\n\nDay of the Dead\, the third film in George A. Romero’s seminal Living Dead series\, presents a world where zombies have been on the rampage for so long that there are very few humans left alive. Trapped in an underground missile silo in Florida\, a small team of scientists\, civilians and trigger-happy soldiers battle desperately to ensure the survival of the human race\, but tension inside the base is reaching breaking-point. Romero describes it as a “tragedy about how a lack of human communication causes chaos and collapse even in this small little pie slice of society.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Crazies (1973\, 103 min)\n\n\n\nSunday\, Oct. 8 at 8:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nCynicism about the military industrial complex wasn’t exactly a fringe position in 1973\, but George A. Romero’s The Crazies is scathing nonetheless. When a military plane carrying a secret bioweapon crashes near the sleepy town of Evans City\, Pennsylvania\, the unsuspecting locals watch in terror as their formerly friendly neighbors turn into homicidal maniacs. Amid the mayhem\, a pair of firemen (and\, significantly\, Vietnam War veterans) named David and Clank lead a small band of survivors attempting to escape both the growing number of infected townspeople and the military’s doomed\, scorched-earth attempts to control the contagion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOfficial Selections\n\n\n\nThe Thriller Picture Show proudly presents a handpicked selection of imaginative horror\, thriller\, science fiction\, and dark comedy films crafted by visionary independent filmmakers from around the world. Early in the 20th century\, Pittsburgh was a worldwide manufacturing leader in iron and\, later\, steel. The labor requirements to produce such output was enormous\, with much of the manpower being supplied by the immigrant populations living in and around the mills. Due to the lack of leisure activities and the need to live close to the mills\, local movie theaters emerged to offer a brief respite from the mundane mill-to-home routine. By 1914\, it was estimated that there were approximately 200 movie theaters in the Pittsburgh region. \n\n\n\nThe Pittsburgh Moving Picture Festival honors Pittsburgh’s rich film heritage by showcasing features and short films from around the world and providing a theatrical opportunity for independent film in a setting that reflects both the history and the prestige of cinematic exhibition. \n\n\n\nImage987 Productions\n\n\n\nImage 987 is a Pittsburgh-based film production company. SUMMARY:Animating Reality: An Evening with Filmmaker Kevin Schreck
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nThe tale starts with a rabbit and pink panther\, involves a thief and a cobbler\, and the epilogue focuses on a rapper. These characters are central to the works that award-winning filmmaker Kevin Schreck\, Visiting Documentary Filmmaker at Robert Morris University\, will present on Thursday\, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnimating Reality: An Evening with Filmmaker Kevin Schreck\, is a special free event hosted by The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center. \n\n\n\nSchreck will share his film\, Persistence of Vision\, an acclaimed documentary about “the greatest animated film never made.” Described as a story of obsession and dreams\, Persistence of Vision centers on the would-be masterpiece of Richard Williams\, the Academy-Award winning animation director of Who Framed Roger Rabbit and two of the Pink Panther movies\, among others. \n\n\n\nStriving to make the greatest animated film of all time\, Williams toiled for more than a quarter of a century on his masterpiece\, The Thief and the Cobbler––only to have it torn from his hands. Schreck’s Persistence of Vision weaves together mind-blowing animation\, rare archival footage\, and exclusive interviews with key animators and artists who worked with Williams on his ill-fated magnum opus.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“In animation circles\, it is a legendary story\,” says The Globe and Mail. “With an amazing cache of archival footage—including Mr. Williams’s original animation—Mr. Schreck’s documentary is gripping\, even though we know from the beginning that Mr. Williams’s project will fail.” \n\n\n\nBesides sharing this feature\, Schreck will also screen excerpts from his forthcoming project\, Enongo\, a documentary-animation hybrid and portrait of a young rapper/producer/Ph.D. candidate\, Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo\, better known by her stage persona\, Sammus. This documentary will be the first feature-length film with an animation team composed entirely of Black women animators\, Schreck says. \n\n\n\nAfter the screenings\, Schreck’s discussion of his career in bringing the worlds of animation and nonfiction cinema together will be followed by a Q&A session. Schreck’s latest film\, Antarctic Voyage (in post production) focuses on a scientific research expedition to the Antarctic Convergence and the remote island of South Georgia. Originally from Minneapolis\, Schreck is now based in Brooklyn. Schreck is the 12th Visiting Documentary Filmmaker at RMU (The Arts and Humanities Department and Center for Documentary Production & Study at the School of Informatics\, Humanities and Social Sciences)\, and as part of his semester-long resident will screen films and share his experienced as a filmmaker while teaching a documentary production class.
