SUMMARY:Twisters Talk with Local Meteorologists
DESCRIPTION:The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center has recruited two of Pittsburgh’s favorite local media personalities—and foremost weather experts—to help enhance guests’ enjoyment of Twisters. \n\n\n\nWPXI’s Scott Harbaugh and KDKA’s Ron Smiley will be at the Theater on Friday\, July 26\, at 7 p.m. for a special conversation tied to Twisters. Our guests are welcome to stick around after the Theater’s 4:30 p.m. Twisters showing or head over before the 7:30 p.m. screening to catch this free program headlined by two of this region’s most accomplished meteorologists. Patrons who have already seen Twisters are also welcome to attend this exclusive event.  \n\n\n\nHarbaugh and Smiley will chat for 20-25 minutes about the art of meteorology\, why the Pittsburgh area has seen so many tornadoes already this summer\, and what the original 1996 Twister got right (and wrong) about one of nature’s most fascinating and destructive weather phenomena. \n\n\n\n“Twister was out right when I was in college\,” says Smiley. “It wasn’t like anything we had ever seen before. On top of that\, the science was accurate! I think that’s what lots of us really appreciate.” \n\n\n\nBoth he and Harbaugh can’t wait to see what Hollywood came up with for Twisters\, which is already garnering strong early reviews. Entertainment Weekly recently declared that Twisters “is just about as good as a summer movie gets.” \n\n\n\n“I think the movie looks amazing!” says Harbaugh. “The technology in it looks phenomenal. It’s the kind of movie where you’re not going to be able to sit back the entire time.” \n\n\n\nBoth Harbaugh and Smiley are excited about this rare in-person opportunity to connect with their loyal viewers—and reconnect with each other. \n\n\n\n“Scott and myself\, we really get along\,” Smiley says. “It’s going to be fun hanging with him\, talking science\, weather and some of the challenges we go through forecasting in Western Pennsylvania.” \n\n\n\nAdds Harbaugh: “Any time I get to hang out with someone in town who does the same thing as me\, it’s always a good time. I’m looking forward to hanging out with Ron and catching up. It’s nice to do something face to face for once!”

SUMMARY:Presentation by Local Motorcyle Expert for The Bikeriders
DESCRIPTION:Note: This event was originally scheduled for Friday\, June 21.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAnyone can watch The Bikeriders at The Lindsay starting June 21. Plus\, folks heading to the Theater the following Friday will also get to hear from a true motorcycle expert. \n\n\n\nMoviegoers who are either leaving The Lindsay’s 4:30 p.m. showing of The Bikeriders or getting ready to catch the full-throttle drama at 7:30 p.m. will have the chance to meet Mike Seate\, a Sewickley resident\, veteran motorcycle journalist\, and Cafe Racer magazine’s editor and publisher. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeate will be on hand at 6:45 p.m. on June 28 for a 30-minute presentation about motorcycle culture\, his knowledge of The Bikeriders inspiration Danny Lyon\, and to show off his 1960 Norton Dominator — a popular\, high-performance street bike imported from the United Kingdom — at The Lindsay. \n\n\n\n“Danny Lyon’s The Bikeriders is a seminal work of 20th-century photojournalism that’s respected by motorcyclists around the world\,” says Seate. “That his work inspired a Hollywood movie is a testament to the enduring quality of his photos.” \n\n\n\nThis Seate talk is the perfect companion to The Bikeriders\, writer-director Jeff Nichols’ sweeping tale of loyalty and love centered around a Midwestern motorcycle club. The captivating summer action-drama stars Oscar nominees Austin Butler (Elvis)\, Tom Hardy (The Revenant) and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) alongside a stacked cast that also includes Jodie Comer (Killing Eve)\, Mike Faist (Challengers)\, Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) and Boyd Holbrook (Logan). \n\n\n\nSeate’s presentation will focus on the period of motorcycle history depicted in The Bikeriders and Lyon’s time documenting members of the real-life Outlaws Motorcycle Club that inspired Nichols’ fictional story. Friday’s talk will also include historical items and memorabilia provided by Seate\, along with the chance to purchase his book\, Two Wheels on Two Reels. \n\n\n\nCafe racers originated in the 1960s as British sport and speed bikes favored by urban “rockers” who used the stripped-down motorcycles to sprint from cafe to cafe. Seate has spent years studying and writing about cafe racers and the folks who love them\, even traveling to the U.K. and absorbing information that he has been sharing with local motorcycle enthusiasts ever since. He also hosted 56 episodes of the Discovery series “Cafe Racer\,” which recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of when filming wrapped on its final season. \n\n\n\nWhether you love motorcycles or just want to watch one of summer 2024’s most anticipated new releases\, come on down to The Lindsay for The Bikeriders and the rare opportunity to hang out with a local guy who knows a lot about the world of cafe racers.

SUMMARY:Theatrical Premiere for Judge Not
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nA single mom. An unexpected pregnancy. Snarky church-hall chatter. A tough decision. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThat’s the drama shared in Judge Not\, the next Emerging Filmmakers Showcase event on Thursday\, June 13\, at 7 p.m. at The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center. \n\n\n\nBlanket Hill Productions\, based in Kittanning\, tackles how men and women grapple with their faith when facing major life decisions in this full-length feature (1 hr 50 min). Director Aaron Dunbar\, director of photography Travis Culley and other members of the team will host a Q&A session after the free screening. While the screening is free\, RSVPs are requested to ensure seating for all; the popular Showcase programming often reaches capacity. \n\n\n\nDunbar has a record of honors at the Chautauqua and Indie Gathering international film festivals\, Queen City Film Festival and CARE Awards.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDunbar\, a Clarion University grad and lifelong avid writer\, ventured into filmmaking after his second novel about a terminally ill girl’s desire to see Bigfoot (A Wish for Giants) fell into the hands of the cast for Finding Bigfoot and comedian Bobcat Goldthwailt. They encouraged Dunbar to turn the book into a movie\, and\, he says\, “Once I saw one of my stories on the big screen\, I knew I had to make more.” \n\n\n\nWhile Dunbar produced previous films\, Judge Not is the first developed by Blanket Hill Productions\, a club-based operation. Its principals developed the club—with committees dedicated to crew\, casting\, fundraising and scripting—to employ collective creativity and engage the expertise of members for faith-based filmmaking and story-telling.   \n\n\n\nThe multitude of committee voices has not slowed progress\, Dunbar says. Filmmakers share that Judge Not was shot in Kittanning over a 10-day stretch in August through the efforts of professional actors\, club members and local theater talents; with only one shoot in October to capture a large group scene. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Judge Not exemplifies the power of independent filmmaking\, demonstrating how dedicated individuals can create impactful stories\,” says Culley. “Join us at Blanket Hill Productions Film Club to pursue your cinema dreams and share your voice\, thanks to the support of venues like the Lindsay Theater.”

SUMMARY:Pillow Talk co-presented by the Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\n\n\n\nSpicy 1950s rom-com Pillow Talk\, starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson\, will screen Tuesday\, June 11\, at 7:30 p.m.\, in partnership with the Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDay stars as Jan\, an interior decorator\, with Hudson as Brad\, a composer and playboy\, who share a telephone party line and a mutual dislike—until Brad sees Jan in person and hatches a plan to win her heart. The film was nominated for five Oscars and won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay. \n\n\n\n“Pillow Talk is a funny\, heartwarming film that harkens back to the premise of the original screwball comedies\, specifically a hilarious battle of the sexes\,” says Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club president Wendy Whittick\, who will introduce the picture. “This film revitalized the careers of Hudson and Day\, recasting him as a comic actor and giving her a sexier image. It was such a success that they were paired in two subsequent films.” \n\n\n\nThe film topped the U.S. box office for seven consecutive weeks\, and grossed nearly $19 million\, then considered a huge amount. It was named to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2009\, recognized for its cultural\, historic and aesthetic significance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPillow Talk is “one of the most lively and up-to-date comedy-romances of the year\,” said The New York Times in its original 1959 review. “It is really the clever witty screenplay that accounts for much of the sparkle in this film. With a CinemaScope screen to play on\, (the screenwriters) and director Michael Gordon have much fun. And that fun is transmitted to the audience in an easy and generous flow of ingeniously graphic situations and nimble repartee.” \n\n\n\nTickets are on sale now!

SUMMARY:Summer Series: Rhythms of the '80s
DESCRIPTION:The decade began with the Sony Walkman and ended with the first stirrings of the World Wide Web. Across the globe\, people played Pac-Man\, obsessed over Princess Di and watched the Berlin Wall topple. \n\n\n\nHere\, in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood\, we saw more ups and downs than Kennywood’s Jack Rabbit. We suffered through the steel industry demise and mourned the loss of Andy Warhol. On the bright side\, in 1980\, the Steelers clinched their fourth Super Bowl. A few years later\, a Canadian teen named Mario arrived—and the rest is history. \n\n\n\nJoin us in opening a cinematic time capsule of this era and let The Lindsay transport you to the decade of shoulder pads and big hair! \n\n\n\n\n\nCaddyshack \n\n\n\nThursday\, June 6 @ 7:00PM \n\n\n\nSunday\, June 16 @ 1:00PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFootloose \n\n\n\nThursday\, June 20 @ 7:00PM \n\n\n\nThursday\, June 27 @ 7:00PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTop Gun \n\n\n\nWednesday\, July 3 @ 7:00PM \n\n\n\nSunday\, July 14 @ 1:00PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCinema Paradiso \n\n\n\nThursday\, July 11 @ 7:00PM \n\n\n\nSunday\, July 21 @ 1:00PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlashdance \n\n\n\nThursday\, July 18 @ 7:00PM \n\n\n\nSunday\, July 28 @ 1:00PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJaws* \n\n\n\nThursday\, July 25 @ 7:00PM \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 4 @ 1:00PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPurple Rain \n\n\n\nThursday\, August 1 @ 7:00PM \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 11 @ 1:00PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLean on Me \n\n\n\nThursday\, August 8 @ 7:00PM \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 18 @ 1:00PM \n\n\n\n\n\n*Yes\, Jaws was released in 1975\, not the ’80s\, but it took a bite of both decades and is a summer staple at the Theater!

SUMMARY:Pittsburgh Moving Picture Festival: Double Feature Competitions & Dawn of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:Double Feature Tickets\n\n\n\nDawn of the Dead Tickets\n\n\n\n\nA 45th anniversary screening of George Romero’s classic zombie film Dawn of the Dead\, along with the Double Feature: Trailer Bash and Raging Pages trailer and screenplay competitions\, will highlight the Pittsburgh Moving Picture Festival\, set for Sunday\, May 19\, at The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center. \n\n\n\nA celebration of the art of cinema and the region’s rich motion picture tradition\, the event also includes a Q&A with actors from Dawn of the Dead\, filmed at the Monroeville Mall and considered one of the most influential horror films of all time.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe afternoon begins at 12:30 p.m. with the Double Feature trailer and screenplay competitions\, a curated program of Official Selections of coming attractions\, all of which are eligible to earn one of the premiere trailer trophies on the festival circuit—the “Tabby”—for Best Editing\, Best Cinematography\, Best Score\, overall Best Trailer and the Audience Favorite award! \n\n\n\nThis event is free to the public but reservations are requested to ensure seating for all. \n\n\n\nThen\, at 1:30 p.m.\, in collaboration with the George A. Romero Foundation’s “Romero Lives!” series\, the festival continues with a 30-min. Q&A with Dawn of the Dead actors Melissa Dunlap (“Airport Zombie Kid”)\, Bob Michelucci (“Scope Zombie”) and “Blond Zombie” Jeannie Jeffries\, in a rare public appearance\, hosted by fellow “zombie talent” veteran and director/producer Mike Ancas (Day of the Dead\, Chasing Zombies). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the Q&A\, at 2 p.m.\, watch Dawn of the Dead as it was intended to be seen: on the big screen. Romero’s gut-chomping\, genre-defining sequel to Night of the Living Dead premiered April 12\, 1979 at the Gateway Theater in downtown Pittsburgh and is rarely seen on movie screens. The plot follows two Philadelphia S.W.A.T. team members\, a traffic reporter\, and his television executive girlfriend seek refuge from a zombie epidemic in a secluded shopping mall  \n\n\n\nThe late critic Roger Ebert gave the movie four out of four stars and proclaimed it one of the best horror films ever made. Empire named it one of the 500 Greatest Movies of all Time in a 2008 survey. \n\n\n\nThe film also launched the career of makeup and special effects artist Tom Savini\, a Pittsburgh native who went on to work on classic horror films such as Friday the 13th parts 1 and 4\, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.

SUMMARY:Whiskey and Weavers: Scotch Whiskey Tasting and Tannahill Weavers Concert Film
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon of great music and fine spirits is in store at The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center Sunday\, May 5 with Whiskey and Weavers. The screening of a live concert film featuring the Tannahill Weavers (recorded at the Greater Pittsburgh Masonic Center in October 2023) will be preceded by a Scotch whiskey tasting to benefit the Balmoral Classic: U.S. Junior Solo Piping & Drumming Championships\, an annual event held in Pittsburgh each fall. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Scotland’s Tannahill Weavers play acoustic instruments\, but the atmosphere at their shows is electric\,” says the Boston Globe. “The quintet is as tight and as versatile as any band in the Celtic music revival. They can summon rock ‘n’ roll intensity or haunting introspection.” \n\n\n\nThe event is presented in partnership with Pittsburgh’s Balmoral School of Piping & Drumming. The Scotch tasting begins at 2 p.m. and the film at 3 p.m. Tickets are available for the film alone\, or for both events.  \n\n\n\nBorn of a session in Paisley\, Scotland\, and named for the town’s historic weaving industry and local poet laureate Robert Tannahill\, the Tannahill Weavers are internationally known for their unique take on Celtic music\, blending beautiful traditional melodies with powerful modern rhythms. \n\n\n\nTheir diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals\, topical songs\, original ballads and lullabies\, and humorous tales of life in Scotland. From reflective ballads to foot-stomping reels and jigs\, the variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Weavers concert at the Pittsburgh Masonic Center “was a highlight of our year\,” says Balmoral executive director George Balderose. “The May 5 screening is a great way to share that experience and spread awareness of traditional Scottish music to the community.”

The anthology includes eight chapters by seven artists\, and the 85-minute screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeveral segments were shot in Butler and Portersville\, Butler County; Washington and Claysville\, Washington County; and at the Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant\, W.Va. \n\n\n\nHershberger\, an Art Institute of Pittsburgh graduate\, and Seaman\, a Robert Morris University alumnus\, met while working on Seaman’s first feature film\, The Barn\, and have collaborated for the past 11 years under their companies Silver Springs Films and Nevermore Productions Films. \n\n\n\n“I love telling stories; I always have since I was a kid\,” says Hershberger. “After writing a multitude of stories\, I wanted to see them visually come alive through the process of filmmaking.” \n\n\n\nThis event is free to the public but reservations are recommended as seats already are going fast. Rumor has it Bigfoot will need at least two seats so everyone behind him can see the screen.

SUMMARY:Freedom House Ambulance: The FIRST Responders
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nThey were truly the first responders. In 1967\, Pittsburgh produced America’s first EMT service: Freedom House Ambulance. This groundbreaking work\, performed solely by Black men and women from the Hill District\, became the basis for all paramedic training in the country.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheir story is told in the Mid-Atlantic Emmy-winning film Freedom House Ambulance: The FIRST Responders\, produced by Annette Banks of WQED-TV\, and screening Thursday\, March 28\, at 7 p.m.\, as part of The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase.  \n\n\n\nThe free showcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, are designed to accelerate filmmakers’ exposure and encourage exchanges between local artists and the public.  \n\n\n\n“The Lindsay is thrilled to present Freedom House Ambulance: The FIRST Responders as part of its Emerging Filmmakers Showcase\, helping to bring this piece of local history to the public’s attention\,” says Carolina Thor\, the Theater’s CEO. “We are particularly honored to have some of these trailblazers in attendance.” \n\n\n\nA Q&A after the screening will include filmmaker Banks\, Freedom House founder Phil Hallen\, and former Freedom House employee John Moon. \n\n\n\nUsing rare archival images\, the 28-minute documentary explores barriers faced by Freedom House Ambulance\, from Hallen’s story of inception to compelling reflections of the paramedic team\, stories of the world-renowned doctors who trained them\, and memories of the residents they served. \n\n\n\n“When I first learned about Freedom House Ambulance\, I knew that I had to tell this story\,” Banks says. “It was a little-known local story\, with major national impact. It was really exciting to meet some of the men and women from Freedom House who set the standard of pre-hospital care for our country\, and it was such a privilege to be able to produce the documentary to help spread the word about this amazing part of American history.” \n\n\n\nDespite the success of Freedom House Ambulance\, racism and power dynamics shut it down\, and faded its recognition in American history.  \n\n\n\nFreedom House: The FIRST Responders is “truly spectacular and a must-see for everyone in Pittsburgh and beyond\,” says the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research at the University of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\n“The Freedom House team of men and women completely transformed the field of emergency medicine\,” observes BikePGH. “The model they created was replicated all over the country … it’s the basis for the city-run ambulance service today. And the documentary lets us hear from the people who made their neighborhood safer\, those who were on the team themselves.” \n\n\n\nThis event is free to the public but RSVPs are requested so that seating for everyone can be ensured.

SUMMARY:Premiere of Restored Pandora's Box with Live Accompaniment
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center\, in partnership with the Pittsburgh Silent Film Society\, will present Pandora’s Box\, starring legendary actress Louise Brooks and accompanied by live music\, on Sunday\, March 3\, at 3 p.m.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConsidered a masterwork of the silent film era\, the picture by G.W. Pabst will be shown in its 2K restoration for the first time in the Pittsburgh area. Lurid and highly controversial upon its release\, the film follows the downward spiral of the fiery yet innocent showgirl Lulu. \n\n\n\nThe film was rediscovered by scholars in the 1950s and began to earn the reputation of an unsung classic. Film critic Roger Ebert reviewed the film in 1998 with great praise\, and included the film on his list of The Great Movies. Director Quentin Tarantino also listed it among his 10 greatest films of all time. \n\n\n\n“Louise Brooks dazzles as the dangerously appealing seductress\,” says the British Film Institute. Brooks’ “rightly acclaimed performance oozes careless vivacity and irresistible charm. But the direction is also brilliantly meticulous\, making memorable use of Günther Krampf’s fluid camera and expressive lighting.” \n\n\n\n“We are pleased to again partner with the Pittsburgh Silent Film Society to bring a treasured silent film to the Theater\,” says Carolina Pais-Barreto Thor\, CEO of The Lindsay. “Audience response to these films has been enthusiastic; particularly because of the texture added by the live musical accompaniment.” \n\n\n\nAccompanying the film will be Ben Opie\, who performs on reeds and electronics\, and teaches music technology at both Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburgh’s CAPA High School; and Mark Micchelli\, a pianist\, composer\, technologist and educator pursuing a doctorate in jazz studies\, composition and theory at the University of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\n“We’re thrilled to co-present this brand new restoration of Louise Brooks’ best film at one of our favorite independent cinemas\, and accompanied by some of Pittsburgh’s best jazz musicians\,” says Chad Hunter\, director of the Pittsburgh Silent Film Society\, whose work has been praised by Martin Scorsese. “It doesn’t get any better.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Pandora’s Box is a piece of glowing cinema which has one searching for superlatives\,” says Stage and Cinema. Louise Brooks’ face “defies time and period\, and is as relevant today as it was in 1929 when she was lured to Germany by Pabst to play the doomed Lulu. No other actress of her period could have realized this character so subtly or with such insouciance.” \n\n\n\nThe 141-minute film has original intertitles in German with English subtitles. SUMMARY:2024 Oscar Contest
DESCRIPTION:For film buff Nick Lumley\, 2023 was a great year for cinema. He loved seeing new\, thought-provoking films such as Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon\, and even a few unheralded gems. \n\n\n\nThe icing on the cake? As winner of The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s 2023 Oscar Contest\, he watched these films for free. \n\n\n\nNow The Lindsay’s Oscar Contest has returned for 2024\, again with the top prize of a free pass to the Theater for an unlimited number of screenings for the remainder of the year. The winner must successfully pick the Best Picture as well as the greatest number of winners among all 23 Oscar categories. \n\n\n\nThe Theater\, a nonprofit that has not raised ticket prices since opening in 2017\, offers this contest every year. Oscar-nominated films are being screened along with new releases until the Academy Awards Ceremony on Sunday\, March 10. This gives patrons plenty of opportunity to watch on the big screen\, ponder the artistry displayed and carefully mark their ballots. \n\n\n\n“Our patrons are passionate about film\, and that’s apparent every year at Oscar Contest time\,” says Carolina Thor\, CEO of the nonprofit cultural center. “So many people predict an amazing number of categories correctly! We look forward to seeing the 2024 winner here at the Theater for many exceptional films through Dec. 31.”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLooking back on the year\, Lumley says he enjoyed seeing more people return to theaters—and appreciated watching original films not connected with a particular franchise. While he loved many of the Best Picture-nominated films—especially The Holdovers and Barbie—his favorite by far was Oppenheimer. \n\n\n\nDirector Christopher Nolan’s take on the making of the first atomic bomb “is the best film of the century so far\,” Lumley says—and unsurprisingly\, his pick for Best Picture. He loves everything about it: the directing\, the sound\, the cinematography\, Cillian Murphy’s acting in the lead role.  \n\n\n\nLumley also calls out Emma Stone’s performance in Poor Things—and Greta Lee’s un-nominated performance in Past Lives\, while noting “I’ve always been a big fan of Paul Giamatti\,” star of The Holdovers.  \n\n\n\nHis under-the-radar film recommendation is A Thousand and One\, which screened at The Lindsay in 2023\, starring Teyana Taylor as a single mother in a gentrifying New York City neighborhood. \n\n\n\nLumley\, who lives in Sewickley\, shares his contest bragging rights with other recent winners from Patterson Township and Big Beaver\, Beaver County.  \n\n\n\nAll are welcome to pick up Oscar ballots at the Theater Box Office\, 418 Walnut St.\, Sewickley\, during screening hours. Think like the Academy in making your predictions\, and remember to include your name\, email and phone number on the ballot. Whether due to knowledge or luck\, teens to seniors have won the year-long\, non-transferable pass. Ballots (one entry per person\, please) must be returned to the Theater Box Office by 8 p.m. on Saturday\, March 9.

SUMMARY:HIVE World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:ENCORE SHOW: February 4 @ 3:15 – 4:15 pm \n\n\n\n\nReserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nUPDATE: The 2 p.m. screening is “sold out\,” though seats are available for a newly added encore screening at 3:15 p.m.\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center kicks off its 2024 Emerging Filmmakers Showcase series with HIVE\, a heartfelt and touching look at Pittsburgh-area beekeeper and skilled carpenter Hank B\, showcasing his love for his winged companions\, and his dedication to sustainability and the art of spinning honey.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 25-minute film is directed by Moon Township resident Ryan Matthew Rust\, who has a special connection with the subject as Hank B’s nephew\, and features cinematography by Scott Township’s Ryan Kroboth\, who beautifully captures the vibrant bees and blooms surrounding Hank at work. \n\n\n\n“The Lindsay is thrilled to support the film industry through the Emerging Filmmakers Showcase for its third year\, working with local filmmakers to provide a big-screen opportunity for both artists and the public\,” says Carolina Pais-Barreto Thor\, the Theater’s CEO. “As gardeners and farmers know\, it’s the time of year to start planning\, so we hope this locally-set film about a Pittsburgher following his passion into beekeeping inspires others.” \n\n\n\nThe free showcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, are designed to encourage exchanges between local filmmakers and the public. A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screening. \n\n\n\nRust’s goal for HIVE was to tell a personal story while also conveying the importance of honey bees to life on earth\, subscribing to Albert Einstein’s thoughts that “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe\, then man would only have four years of life left.”  \n\n\n\n“I’m passionate about authentic stories\, and have consistently woven a raw and genuine approach into every project over the years\,” says Rust\, a nine-year veteran of the film industry. “I aim for audiences to depart not only with answers but also with lingering questions\, encouraging them to delve deeper into the themes explored.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Discovering my uncle’s involvement with honey bees years ago\, I was able to witness first hand the intricate process of honey extraction and the unique apiary he created. As a filmmaker and storyteller\, I soon realized that this compelling story deserved to be shared with a wider audience.” \n\n\n\nDirector/producer Rust collaborates with various production companies and storytellers across the nation\, producing an extensive body of work in creative visual storytelling. Cinematographer Kroboth career spans 11 years and includes projects with Elysian\, TCM\, CNN\, and Intrusion\, and a pivotal role in filming two seasons of the History Channel’s The Food That Built America. \n\n\n\nOther crew members include art director Caitlin Rust\, gaffer Jim McClain\, score composer Ryan Will Stewart\, and “noise stylist” Shawn Jackson of Red Caiman Studios. \n\n\n\nWhile admission is free to all Emerging Filmmakers Showcase events\, those attending are asked to RSVP at The Lindsay’s ticketing page to ensure seating for all.

SUMMARY:Azure Festive Families Concert
DESCRIPTION:The third annual Festive Families interactive holiday concert\, a fun event that fosters community among people with autism\, will be celebrated at The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center at 2 p.m.\, Sunday\, Dec. 3. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Autism Pittsburgh and Azure Family Concerts\, the free event features music by Red Beans and Rice Combo\, described as a sharp-dressed band that delivers a danceable mix of New Orleans R&B and early rock & roll nuggets\, with a jazzy dash of Tin Pan Alley. The band promises to deliver selections from A Charlie Brown Christmas as well as “jazzed-up Hanukkah selections.”  \n\n\n\n“We are very happy to again partner with Autism Pittsburgh and Azure for one of their most joyous events\,” said Carolina Pais-Barreto Thor\, the Theater’s CEO. “Families share that sensory friendly programming can be limited in suburban and rural areas\, and by working with partners like Autism Pittsburgh and Azure\, The Theater is able to extend inclusive programming from screenings to concerts and other live performance events. Time and again\, parents and educators share the value this programming brings to families impacted by autism and other limitations.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants at Festive Families can opt to sing\, dance\, vocalize or clap\, and a designated quiet space is also available. “All behaviors are welcome\,” Azure says. \n\n\n\n“Azure Pittsburgh recognizes that autism and related challenges can present barriers to attendance and engagement in a formal concert setting\,” says Anitra Birnbaum\, executive director of Azure Pittsburgh. “Our goal is to create an environment where all people are accepted\, embraced and celebrated—a goal that is particularly important during the holidays\, when it is so easy to feel lost and overwhelmed amid all the hustle and bustle.” \n\n\n\nRegistration for the hour long event is available online. On Sundays\, parking is free in Sewickley\, including on the street and the municipal lot next to the Theater (418 Walnut St.); ramps to the Theater offer easy accessibility.

SUMMARY:Picture Proof
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nPicture Proof\, a documentary film providing “an intimate look at the bonds that hold one West Virginia family together and the disease that threatens to tear them apart\,” will screen as part of The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShowcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, are designed to encourage exchanges between local filmmakers and the public\, and are free to all.  \n\n\n\n“Supporting the tri-state region’s film industry with Showcase events is part of The Lindsay’s mission\,” says Carolina Pais-Barreto Thor\, the Theater’s CEO. “We are especially honored to screen this documentary that brings an important perspective to an epidemic that sadly continues to ravage communities in Appalachia and beyond.” \n\n\n\nPicture Proof\, directed by Marshall University professor Tijah Bumgarner and University of Kentucky professor Jena Seiler\, follows Ashley from 2018 through 2021 as she struggles with addiction and gives birth to two children\, raising them with the help of her mother\, Debi Ellis. \n\n\n\nEllis will join the Q&A session with Bumgarner and Seiler after the 90-minute screening. \n\n\n\nAll three women have witnessed the impact of addiction in their own families; Bumgarner lost her father to an overdose. In making Picture Proof\, they chose to “push back against representations of addiction that too often perpetuate notions of personal failing and community apathy.”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe directors share: “When we met Ashley\, she was luminous\, charismatic\, generous\, and kind. We were struck by how open she was about her past: being in the ‘madness’ (active addiction) and her decision to leave her newborn daughter (Piper) in order to get treatment. \n\n\n\n“During our three years of filming\, we witnessed Ashley give birth to her second child\, Asher\, the deep bond between Ashley\, Debi and Piper\, and the remarkable strength of these women as they faced the precariousness of recovery\, the turbulence of relapse\, and the despair of addiction.” \n\n\n\n“Picture Proof is the most honest portrayal of addiction I have ever had the honor to witness\,” said Katie Dellamaggiore\, independent award-winning director and producer not involved with this project. “This beautifully moving film doesn’t offer straightforward answers but rather wades into complex territory with the utmost patience\, grace and humanity.” \n\n\n\nWhile admission is free\, those attending are asked to RSVP at The Lindsay’s ticketing page to ensure seating for all.

SUMMARY:We're All Going To Die: "A mostly funny documentary"
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nPreppers\, climate doomers\, bunker-dwellers … journalist and filmmaker Ben Knight explores the world of people preparing for total social and ecological collapse in the film We’re All Going To Die\, screening as part of The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShowcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, are designed to encourage exchanges between local filmmakers and the public\, and are free to all. Knight\, based in Berlin and an alumnus of Allegheny College in Meadville\, is currently touring the U.S. to promote the film. \n\n\n\n“Supporting filmmakers throughout the region with Showcase events is a core value at The Lindsay\,” says Carolina Pais-Barreto Thor\, the Theater’s CEO. “We are delighted to welcome this innovative filmmaker to our Theater and offer audiences the opportunity to explore this topic from a global perspective.” \n\n\n\nAsking the question “What would you do if the world was going to come to an end?” Knight embarks on a four-year journey from Berlin to London to Kansas to Norway to the Chicxulub crater in Mexico\, to learn from those convinced humanity will soon expire. \n\n\n\n“For anyone with eyes and ears and an internet connection\, it has become difficult to ignore the global crises encroaching on us\,” Knight says. “When I began this work\, I thought this would make for an amusing subject for a film\, but soon enough I realized that I shared many of these people’s fears myself. So the film has\, somewhat unwillingly\, become about my own confrontation with the world’s mortality.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStill\, We’re All Going To Die doesn’t ignore the humorous aspects of the topic\, as its tagline is “A mostly funny documentary.” \n\n\n\nOn the international festival circuit\, We’re All Going To Die was an Official Selection at the Košice International Film Festival in Slovakia; the Signs of the Night International Festival in Berlin; the Depth of Field\, Docs Without Borders and Nature Without Borders international film festivals; and a semi-finalist at both the 2023 Rotterdam Independent Film Festival and Palermo International Film Festival. \n\n\n\nKnight\, a journalist completing his first film\, has written for Deutsche Welle\, the Guardian\, the New Statesman\, Prospect\, der Freitag\, and others. SUMMARY:The TRIP Local Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis scary season\, Los Angeles-based director\, actor\, writer and producer Dean Jacobs will return to his native Pittsburgh for the local premiere of The TRIP\, a haunted house/slasher film honoring the legacy of late director George A. Romero as well as the city of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\nFeaturing local and nationally known actors\, the film screens Thursday\, Oct. 26\, at 7:30 p.m. as part of The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s Emerging Filmmakers Showcase. Showcase events\, a staple at The Lindsay\, are designed to encourage exchanges between local filmmakers and the public\, and are free to all. \n\n\n\n“Supporting local filmmakers with Showcase events is part of The Lindsay’s mission\,” says Carolina Pais-Barreto Thor\, The Lindsay’s CEO. “It is always such a thrill to see local filmmakers get a chance to show their work on the big screen\, and we are especially delighted to see Dean bring the results of his West Coast experience back home.” \n\n\n\nThe setting is a farmhouse in Westmoreland County’s Mount Pleasant\, where four childhood friends visit with plans for a relaxing weekend. But\, Jacobs says\, “the group soon finds out the house has something else planned.” \n\n\n\nRaised in McMurray and a 2002 graduate of Peters Township High School\, Jacobs began performing at the age of 10 for South Park Children’s Theatre\, Little Lake Theater and others.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter graduating from Indiana University of PA\, he landed some film roles\, including a small role in the locally shot feature\, A New York Heartbeat\, opposite future Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan. Afterward\, Jacobs decided to make the move to LA. \n\n\n\n“Filmmaking can and should be accessible for everyone with a desire to create\,” Jacobs says. “If you have a (phone) camera—and almost everyone does—that’s a good start. Tell a story. Give the audience something to invest in. \n\n\n\n“George Romero wrote the textbook on making a great independent film on a minimal budget. My intention was always to pay tribute to the city of Pittsburgh and\, in some small way\, hopefully honor the legacy of Romero in the process\,” Jacobs says. “The casting of Lori Cardille and John Amplas furthered that intention.” \n\n\n\nIn Romero’s third zombie film\, Day of the Dead\, Cardille played the lead role\, a tough-edged woman who had to fight off her rage-fueled male counterparts as well as zombies. She’s the daughter of “Chilly Billy” Cardille\, host of Pittsburgh’s Chiller Theater from the 1960s to the mid-1980s\, who played a small role in Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. \n\n\n\nAmplas\, in addition to his roles in  Romero films (Dawn of the Dead\, Day of the Dead\, Creepshow\, Martin and Knightriders)\, served as Romero’s casting director. Theater director at the Pittsburgh Playhouse\, Amplas taught theater at Point Park University for more than 20 years. \n\n\n\nOther stars of The TRIP include: Doug Bradley\, who played the lead role of Pinhead in Clive Barker’s Hellraiser\, Luke Edwards\, whose film credits include The Wizard\, Newsies\, Little Big League\, Jeepers Creepers II\, and Hannah Fierman\, a horror film veteran known for films and television shows including V/H/S\, Siren\, Creepshow\, Dynasty and Vampire Diaries. LA-based actor Evan Sloan and Salt Lake City-based Calvin Dittmore round out the main cast. \n\n\n\nDirector of photography Ethan Leisie is from Cranberry Township and supporting crew all live in the tri-state area. \n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers. Big Spring Spirits\, a community-centric craft distillery that is based in Bellefonte\, Pa. and operates a store in Sewickley\, will also be on hand with “The TRIP-inspired” signature cocktails available for purchase. \n\n\n\nWhile admission is free\, those attending are asked to RSVP at The Lindsay’s ticketing page to ensure seating for all. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick Me!
