SUMMARY:Queering the Documentary: An Evening with Filmmaker Connor Lee O’Keefe
DESCRIPTION:The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center will introduce regional cinephiles to the singular filmmaking talent of Connor Lee O’Keefe later this month. \n\n\n\nO’Keefe is a nonfiction filmmaker\, artist and teacher who uses a queer lens to shape the realities captured in his films. He’s currently in residence as this semester’s Visiting Documentary Filmmaker at Robert Morris University. \n\n\n\nHe’ll be at The Lindsay on Thursday\, Nov. 7\, at 7 p.m. to share five of his documentary shorts as part of a specially curated Queering the Documentary program. Those screenings will be followed by a Q&A with O’Keefe. Tickets to this event are free\, but RSVPs are encouraged in advance due to space limitations. \n\n\n\n\nSome of O’Keefe’s films that will be screened on Nov. 7 include Our Transition\, which explores O’Keefe’s gender transition from his parents’ perspective; Imagine a Body\, an essay film on the spiritual nature of hormone replacement therapy for transgender men that premiered in 2022 as part of the The New Yorker Documentary Series; and No More Longing\, an immersive portrait of Brazilian musician Jaime Jobim that premiered at SFFilm in San Francisco. \n\n\n\n\n“It is a pleasure to work with our Visiting Documentary Filmmaker each fall semester\,” says Jen Stratakis\, RMU’s Arts & Humanities’ media outreach coordinator. “I have the privilege of helping each one connect with the RMU student body and greater Pittsburgh film community to share their work in a meaningful way. This semester\, Connor Lee O’Keefe brings his beautiful take on storytelling to our campus and our town. He is eloquent and his films are inspiring.”   \n\n\n\nThis is the second year in a row that The Lindsay will be hosting a Robert Morris Visiting Documentary Filmmaker’s public showcase. \n\n\n\n\n“I’m honored to have been able to continue refining my work as an artist with RMU and to have an opportunity to participate in fruitful dialogue with audiences at The Lindsay\,” says O’Keefe. “We need independent theaters to keep this art form doing what it does best—and that’s bringing people together.” \n\n\n\nRMU’s Visiting Documentary Filmmaker program is a 15-week residency that requires participants to teach a documentary introduction class\, create and share their work\, and actively engage with the RMU faculty\, student body and general community. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“We need queer and trans perspectives now more than ever\,” says O’Keefe. “I hope these films immerse you into a space that allows you to wonder\, heal and grow.”

SUMMARY:2024 Three Rivers Film Festival at The Lindsay
DESCRIPTION:Three Rivers Film Festival Returns to The Lindsay with 6 Films—and 2 locally made gems  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nTwo high-profile examples of Pittsburgh’s filmmaking prowess will play at The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center this November as part of Film Pittsburgh’s 2024 Three Rivers Film Festival. Both screenings will be followed by cast and crew Q&As. \n\n\n\nThree Rivers\, which was recently crowned this region’s Best Film Festival by Pittsburgh City Paper readers\, returns to The Lindsay with six screenings from Nov. 15-17. This is the fourth time that The Lindsay will serve as a satellite location for Three Rivers\, which spotlights independent cinema from around the world and takes place across multiple venues from Nov. 13-20. \n\n\n\n\nAdvance tickets are available for individual films at the Three Rivers Film Festival website\, as well as full festival and other passes. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Lindsay Theater on the day of each screening and will be available on a first-come\, first-served basis.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlow\n\n\n\nFriday\, November 15 @ 5:00 P.M. – Pittsburgh Premiere\n\n\n\nFlow is an animated adventure about a cat whose home is devastated by a destructive flood. He seeks refuge on a drifting sailboat\, along with a collection of other displaced animals searching for dry land. This visually sumptuous and heartfelt film also happens to be Latvia’s submission for Best International Feature at the 2025 Academy Awards.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Becoming a Guinea Fowl \n\n\n\nFriday\, November 15 @ 7:00 P.M. – Pittsburgh Premiere\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOn Becoming a Guinea Fowl currently boasts a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and recently earned Rungano Nyoni a directing prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. This internationally produced dramedy follows a woman whose impassive response to her uncle’s death hints at her middle-class Zambian family’s repressed secrets that may soon come to light. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Great One\n\n\n\nSaturday\, November 16 @ 4:00 P.M. – Pittsburgh Connection\n\n\n\nThe Great One is a sweet\, nostalgic tale of a sportswriter reminiscing about her childhood passions: baseball and the 1970s Pirates. Think The Sandlot\, but in Pittsburgh and centered around a group of preteens’ natural adoration for the late Roberto Clemente. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with members of the film’s production team. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBasic Psych\n\n\n\nSaturday\, November 16 @ 7:00 P.M. – Pittsburgh Connection\n\n\n\nBasic Psych is a taut psychological thriller pitting a psychiatrist trying to protect his family against a paranoid murderer. Shot locally\, the film is deftly helmed by Melissa Martin (The Bread\, My Sweet) and stars two of Pittsburgh’s favorite actors\, David Conrad (Ghost Whisperer) and two-time Tony Award winner Michael Cerveris (The Gilded Age). The actors are at the top of their game in this sophisticated murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. (Adult content: violence) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSmall Town Universe\n\n\n\nSunday\, November 17 @ 4:00 P.M. – Pennsylvania Premiere\n\n\n\nSmall Town Universe is a riveting documentary that paints an intimate portrait of life in Green Bank\, West Virginia\, home to the world’s most sensitive radio telescope and the only U.S. town that bans Wi-Fi and cell phones. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with some of the film’s subjects. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBob Trevino Likes It\n\n\n\nSunday\, November 17 @ 7:00 P.M. – Pennsylvania Premiere\n\n\n\nBob Trevino Likes It won the 2024 SXSW film festival’s narrative feature competition. Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria) and John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge!) star in this clever comedy about an upbeat young woman who forges an unlikely friendship with a man who has the exact same name as her deadbeat father.

SUMMARY:KHAF World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Tickets\n\n\n\n\nPittsburgh produces quite a bit of independently made horror films. Rarely\, though\, do those cinematic endeavors venture into folk horror territory. \n\n\n\nFor the uninitiated\, “folk horror” is a cinematic sub-genre known for isolated environments\, an emphasis on nature\, and utilizing real or fictional folklore to invoke terror and dread. That’s exactly what Jess Kaeden was aspiring for with KHAF\, her locally filmed feature about a Pennsylvania farm family being terrorized by a demon hellbent on obtaining their firstborn child. \n\n\n\nKHAF will have its world premiere on Thursday\, Nov. 21\, at 7 p.m. as the next entry in the The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s ongoing Emerging Filmmakers Showcase series. That screening will be immediately followed by a Q&A with writer-director Kaeden; co-writers Jason Burke and Justen Kimball; and other members of the KHAF filmmaking team. \n\n\n\n\nTickets are free\, but RSVPs are encouraged in advance due to space limitations. \n\n\n\n“What makes KHAF sort of different from anything that anybody’s doing around here is that it’s more folk horror\,” says Kaeden\, the founder of locally based Spinning Web Productions. “The A24 atmosphere and aesthetic\, you don’t really see that around here.” \n\n\n\nKHAF stars a slew of recognizable local talent\, including Samantha Ainsworth\, Hattie Baier\, Brian Ceponis\, Kenneth Pierce and David Ogrodowski. The film was produced by\, among others\, Mike Ancas (Day of the Dead) and Wes Fisher (Children as Giants). \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAinsworth plays Vera Darling\, who is forced to confront her family’s dark past that’s tied to an ancient cult and child-sacrifice rituals in service of Moloch\, an ancient Carthaginian demon. Kaeden said she drew inspiration for KHAF from recent Hollywood folk horror hits like Robert Eggers’ The Witch and Ari Aster’s Midsommar. \n\n\n\nShe wants to make sure everyone interested in attending the KHAF world premiere knows that her film deals with “deep psychological traumas.”  \n\n\n\nKaeden is a 24-year-old Connellsville native and graduate of the George A. Romero Filmmaking Program. KHAF was shot during summer and fall 2022 largely on farmland in Belle Vernon. Kaeden also set her film in the Keystone State because “I didn’t want to make a film out of Pennsylvania and call it somewhere else.” \n\n\n\n\nShe can’t wait for this unique example of Western Pennsylvania-filmed folk horror to debut next week at The Lindsay. \n\n\n\n“We’re all about supporting independent filmmakers\,” Kaeden says. “Pennsylvania is very centered around independent filmmakers\, but it’s very special to have a venue that has these Emerging Filmmaker Showcases. As an independent filmmaker\, I feel very honored.”
