SUMMARY:Summer of Timeless Classics
DESCRIPTION:The Lindsay is punctuating this blockbuster season with a lineup of Timeless Classics! We’re providing moviegoers with a wide selection of beloved films spanning decades of cinematic history. \n\n\n\nRevisit one of Hollywood’s most epic romances with Casablanca. Get acquainted with Frank Capra’s directorial brilliance by checking out Arsenic and Old Lace and It Happened One Night.  Participate in The Lindsay’s cherished summer tradition of Cinema Paradiso. \n\n\n\nYou can also celebrate 70 years of Rebel Without a Cause\, 60 years of The Sound of Music\, 40 years of The Goonies and (almost) 30 years of The Birdcage with us this summer. \n\n\n\nBetween these seven Timeless Classics and Hollywood’s latest fare\, it’s going to be one heck of a summer at The Lindsay! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCasablanca\n\n\n\nPG | 1h 42min | Drama\, Romance\n\n\n\nDirector: Michael Curtiz\n\n\n\nStars: Humphrey Bogart\, Ingrid Bergman\, Paul Henreid\n\n\n\nSUNDAY\, JUNE 22\, AT 1 P.M. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere has arguably never been a more epic romance committed to celluloid than the one between Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) and Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) in 1942’s Casablanca. Their grand courtship finished in first place on Variety’s ranking of the 50 greatest romantic movies ever made. \n\n\n\nDirector Michael Curtiz’s film is an “exceptionally well-directed and well-played picture\,” raves The Los Angeles Times. More than 80 years later\, Casablanca is still a “drama that lifts you right out of your seat\,” writes The Hollywood Reporter. \n\n\n\n“The picture has exceptional merits as absorbing entertainment\, reflecting the fine craftsmanship of all who had hands in its making. Certainly a more accomplished cast of players cannot be imagined\, and their direction by Michael Curtiz is inspired.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtime for Casablanca\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Birdcage\n\n\n\nR | 1h 58min | Comedy\n\n\n\nDirector: Mike Nichols\n\n\n\nStars: Robin Williams\, Nathan Lane\, Gene Hackman\n\n\n\nTUESDAY\, JUNE 24\, AT 7 P.M. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Birdcage remains a groundbreaking milestone in the history of LGBTQ+ cinema. This remake of the French farce La Cage Aux Folles stars Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as a gay couple trying to literally play it straight while meeting their son’s future in-laws. \n\n\n\nDirector Mike Nichols’ film is an “enchantingly witty and humane entertainment” that “actually improves upon its source\,” raves Entertainment Weekly. “In The Birdcage\, we go beyond the stereotypes to see the characters’ depth and humanity\,” praises the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. \n\n\n\nAdds BBC: “What’s impressive is how relatively progressive The Birdcage still feels\, within the context of mainstream cinema\, in its treatment of queerness. Of the other Hollywood attempts at a ‘gay comedy’ in the 1990s\, and since … few have reached the bar that Nichols set.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtime for The Birdcage\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRebel Without a Cause\n\n\n\nPG-13 | 1h 51min | Drama\, Coming of Age\n\n\n\nDirector: Nicholas Ray\n\n\n\nStars: James Dean\, Natalie Wood\, Sal Mineo\n\n\n\nSUNDAY\, JUNE 29\, AT 1 P.M. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHas anyone ever exuded pure\, unfiltered coolness more than James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause? He plays Jim Stark\, the new kid in town looking for a fresh start. Jim ends up making plenty of friends—along with a few enemies. \n\n\n\nRebel Without a Cause was released less than a month after the 24-year-old Dean’s tragic death. “As a ‘farewell’ performance he leaves behind\, with this film\, genuine artistic regret\, for here was a talent which might have touched the heights\,” writes Variety. \n\n\n\nExpounds Slant Magazine: “Profoundly romantic and lacerating in its despair\, Nicholas Ray’s Rebel Without a Cause\, a self-contained portrait of three isolated teenagers\, is James Dean’s best film. … He’s emotionally direct\, tenderly seductive\, protective of others and blessed with courtly humor.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtime for Rebel Without a Cause\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCinema Paradiso—Theatrical Cut\n\n\n\nPG | 2h 4min | Drama\, Coming of Age \n\n\n\nDirector: Giuseppe Tornatore\n\n\n\nStars: Salvatore Cascio\, Philippe Noiret\, Antonella Attili\n\n\n\nIn Italian\, with English Subtitles\n\n\n\nTHURSDAY\, JULY 10\, AT 7 P.M.; THURSDAY\, AUG. 14\, AT 7 P.M. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt wouldn’t be summer at The Lindsay without Cinema Paradiso\, the sumptuous coming-of-age drama with a beautiful Ennio Morricone score. This Academy Award-winner follows a young boy as he falls in love with film and must choose between home and pursuing his dreams. \n\n\n\nCinema Paradiso is an “impossibly well-crafted” film that’s full of cinematic “richness and density of observation\,” lauds The Guardian. As The Washington Post succinctly summarizes: “It is\, in a word\, exquisite.” \n\n\n\n“There are films as lovely\, but none lovelier than Cinema Paradiso\, a folkloric salute to the medium itself\, flickering with yesterday’s innocence and lingering on the mind like bubbles in wine. Born of director Giuseppe Tornatore’s childhood memories\, this is a magic lantern in a Sicilian boy’s hand.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for Cinema Paradiso\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArsenic and Old Lace\n\n\n\nNR | 1h 58min | Comedy\, Thriller\n\n\n\nDirector: Frank Capra\n\n\n\nStars: Cary Grant\, Priscilla Lane\, Raymond Massey\n\n\n\nTHURSDAY\, JULY 24\, AT 7 P.M.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArsenic and Old Lace is a 1944 comedic gem starring Cary Grant as a recently married writer who is horrified to learn that his beloved aunts (played by Josephine Hull and Jean Adair) have been harboring a bloody secret. \n\n\n\nThe first of two Frank Capra-directed films playing at The Lindsay this summer is a ” riotous farce” and “good macabre fun\,” praises The New York Times. Arsenic and Old Lace remains “an example of ensemble scenery-gnawing that has yet to be surpassed\,” declares Empire. \n\n\n\n“Josephine Hull and Jean Adair are delightfully dotty as the lethal landladies. … But it’s Cary Grant who steals the show\, as his double takes\, deliberate delivery and pantomimic commotions allow just a whisper of sanity to seep into this gloriously eccentric scenario.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtime for Arsenic and Old Lace\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Goonies\n\n\n\nPG | 1h 54min | Adventure\, Comedy\n\n\n\nDirector: Richard Donner\n\n\n\nStars: Sean Astin\, Josh Brolin\, Corey Feldman\n\n\n\nSUNDAY\, AUG. 10\, AT 1 P.M.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdventure awaits in The Goonies\, the 1985 summer classic about a group of kids who bite off a bit more than they can chew while searching for a pirate’s hidden treasure. The film was directed by Richard Donner (Superman) and written by Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus (of Home Alone fame). \n\n\n\nThe Goonies is a “deliciously dizzy adventure yarn” bursting with “crowd-pleasing perks\,” applauds New York Daily News. This was the film that proved “Spielberg and his directors are absolute masters of how to excite and involve an audience\,” proclaims RogerEbert.com. \n\n\n\n“The Goonies is a smooth mixture of the usual ingredients from Steven Spielberg action movies\, made special because of the high-energy performances of the kids who have the adventures. … There’s not just a thrill a minute; there’s a thrill\, a laugh\, a shock and a special effect.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtime for The Goonies\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt Happened One Night\n\n\n\nNR | 1h 45min | Romance\, Comedy\n\n\n\nDirector: Frank Capra\n\n\n\nStars: Clark Gable\, Claudette Colbert\, Walter Connolly\n\n\n\nSUNDAY\, SEPT. 7\, AT 1 P.M. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt Happened One Night is a 1934 screwball comedy from It’s a Wonderful Life director Frank Capra. Clark Gable stars as newspaper reporter Peter Warne\, who runs into heiress Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) and becomes her accidental travel partner. Hijinks ensue\, and sparks fly. \n\n\n\nThe Los Angeles Times in 1934 was so confident that It Happened One Night would be a hit that it declared\, “And if the public doesn’t go all the way in for this one\, then there is not\, nor should be\, any joy in Cinemaland.” The New Republic agreed\, calling the film “first-rate entertainment.” \n\n\n\n“What the picture as a whole shows is that by changing such types as the usual pooh-bah father and city editor into people with some wit and feeling\, by consistently preferring the light touch to the heavy\, and by casting actors who are thoroughly up to the work of acting\, you can make some rather comely and greenish grasses grow.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtime for It Happened One Night\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Sound of Music\n\n\n\nG | 2h 59min | Musical\, Drama\, Romance\n\n\n\nDirector: Robert Wise\n\n\n\nStars: Julie Andrews\, Christopher Plummer\, Eleanor Parker\n\n\n\nSUNDAY\, SEPT. 14\, AT 1 P.M.; WEDNESDAY\, SEPT. 17\, AT 6:30 P.M. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay’s Summer of Timeless Classics concludes with a 60th-anniversary screening of The Sound of Music. Nobody can resist this gorgeous recounting of how a bubbly nun named Maria (Julie Andrews) entered Georg von Trapp’s (Christopher Plummer) home and brought love and music back into his family’s lives and hearts. \n\n\n\nThis Best Picture winner was “impeccably cast” and “offers enough sentiment to warm\,” wrote the Associated Press in 1965. The Sound of Music remains “one of the most beloved family-friendly classics in cinema history\,” proclaims IndieWire.  \n\n\n\n“Even as an adult\, you’ll still find yourself singing along. That score is immortal … and the music has never sounded half as good as it does coming from Julie Andrews\, whose spritely and luminous portrayal of nun-turned-governess Maria remains the gold standard for musical theater acting.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for The Sound of Music

Embrace that academic spirit and enjoy a documentary (or two\, or three) at The Lindsay! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRebel With a Clause\n\n\n\nNR | 1h 26min\n\n\n\nDirector: Brandt Johnson\n\n\n\nStars: Ellen Jovin\, Brandt Johnson\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor Ellen Jovin\, grammar isn’t a set of rules in need of policing. That’s why this “roving grammarian” started setting up public “Grammar Tables” with the express purpose of inviting anyone to ask questions and\, ideally\, inspire civil and scintillating discussions. \n\n\n\nRebel With a Clause chronicles Jovin’s experiences behind her Grammar Table in all 50 states. Director (and Jovin’s husband) Brandt Johnson follows Jovin around as she interacts with everyday folks who have equally passionate opinions about the English language. \n\n\n\nJohnson and Jovin’s documentary is “the funniest movie so far this year\,” declares The Berkshire Edge. “The action is breezy and lighthearted” while also offering “instances of surprise” for even the most diehard grammar aficionados\, writes The New York Times. \n\n\n\n“Grammar is language glue that binds us together\,” Jovin told CBC News. “While we’re talking … we get this human connection\, this sense of community\, and it just feels so joyous and sometimes even raucous.” \n\n\n\nJohnson and Jovin will join us for an in-person Q&A following the 7 p.m. Rebel With a Clause screening on Friday\, Aug. 29. \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for Rebel With a Clause\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArt for Everybody\n\n\n\nNR | 1h 46min\n\n\n\nDirector: Miranda Yousef\n\n\n\nStar: Thomas Kinkade\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nChances are good you’ve seen a Thomas Kinkade original. You may even own a print or mug made by one of the most commercially successful (and critically reviled) artists in American history. \n\n\n\nArt for Everybody documents Kinkade’s difficult life and shows that there was more to this “Painter of Light” than anyone could’ve guessed. \n\n\n\nDirector Miranda Yousef takes viewers into Kinkade’s “vault” of previously unreleased works that his family discovered following the artist’s shocking 2012 death. There are thousands of paintings in that collection\, many of which are darker and more formally interesting than the average Kinkade pastoral. \n\n\n\n“Many fascinating threads” are explored in Yousef’s “insightful and highly entertaining documentary\,” raves Variety. Art for Everybody is a “well-structured\, meticulously researched and revealing” film\, proclaims The New York Times.  \n\n\n\nAdds RogerEbert.com: “Miranda Yousef has come up with a structurally complex and very empathetic portrait of a troubled man. … This is a fascinating documentary about a family discovering the depth and complexity of their patriarch while coming to terms with his flaws.” \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for Art for Everybody\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSanibel\n\n\n\nNR | 1h 6min\n\n\n\nDirector: Jamie Winterstern\n\n\n\nStars: Emily Miller\, Judy Beerman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSanibel was originally conceived as a wholesome look at seashell culture in Southwest Florida. Its two stars\, Emily Miller and Judy Beerman\, are jovial figures with deep roots in that very tourist-friendly area. \n\n\n\nSix weeks into filming\, Hurricane Ian ravaged the Florida coast—including the tiny island of Sanibel. There was no way director Jamie Winterstern’s film could continue as planned amidst so much destruction and despair. \n\n\n\n“It looked like a nuclear bomb had let off\,” Miller told WBBH-TV. “All I could do was cry and say\, ‘My beloved island!’” \n\n\n\nWinterstern’s film suddenly became an exercise in capturing a grieving community’s efforts to heal and rebuild. Miller and Beerman instantly became symbols of hope and examples of resilience. \n\n\n\n“They’re very special people\,” Winterstern told WBBH. “I think being able to give them a voice is an accomplishment of what this movie does\, and I’m proud of it.” \n\n\n\nWinterstern will participate in a virtual Q&A following the 5 p.m. Sanibel screening on Monday\, Sept. 1. \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for Sanibel\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSingle-Use Planet\n\n\n\nNR | 57min\n\n\n\nDirector: Steve Cowan\n\n\n\nStars: Rocco Martini\, Sharon Pillar\, Lew Villotti\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re all taught from an early age to separate trash from recyclable materials. So then why does so much plastic still end up in our oceans? In Single-Use Planet\, director Steve Cowan attempts to uncover the political and economic factors that have resulted in plastic becoming a major aquatic pollutant. \n\n\n\n“While filming content for another project out at sea\, we found ourselves at times amidst vast gyres of ocean plastic stretching from horizon to horizon\,” Cowan tells KQED. \n\n\n\n“We knew at that point that we had to tell the story of the growing dangers of the overuse of discardable\, single-use plastics that are threatening our oceans and\, in many cases\, our health.” \n\n\n\nCowan’s investigation begins in Pennsylvania and features plenty of politicians\, scientists and concerned citizens from the Keystone State. Single-Use Planet interviews a few figures from the Pittsburgh area—including multiple Beaver residents and leaders. \n\n\n\n“Ultimately\, each person and family will make their own decisions about using plastic\,” says Cowan. “We simply hope to provide as much information as possible to inform those decisions.” \n\n\n\nLocal environmental experts and advocates will join us for an in-person panel discussion following the 2:45 p.m. Single Use-Planet screening on Saturday\, Sept. 6. \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for Single-Use Planet\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaregiving\n\n\n\nPG | 1h 54min\n\n\n\nDirector: Chris Durrance\n\n\n\nStars: Bradley Cooper\, Uzo Aduba\, Matthew Cauli\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery day\, roughly 63 million Americans serve as primary caregivers for an ill or aging loved one. Their lives are put on pause due to this immense responsibility they perform out of pure devotion—but also at great physical\, mental and financial costs.  \n\n\n\nCaregiving spotlights the daily challenges and triumphs experienced by just a few of these individuals. Director Chris Durrance’s subjects include a young father caring for his wife and son; a 14-year-old helping his father look after his ailing mother; and a young woman taking care of her dementia-stricken father. \n\n\n\nDurrance’s documentary was executive produced by Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper and narrated by Emmy winner Uzo Aduba. Both actors have served as caregivers for parents during their battles with cancer. \n\n\n\n“Caregivers are heroic people\,” says Cooper in a press release.”Their ability to focus and give all of themselves is something I stand in awe of. … It is my hope that Caregiving will provide affirmation and support for those who do this profoundly meaningful and increasingly vital work.” \n\n\n\nThe Lindsay showed a shorter Caregiving cut earlier this summer in front of a sold-out crowd. Documentary Series audiences will see the full version of this moving and powerful film. \n\n\n\nDurrance will participate in a virtual Q&A following the 7 p.m. Caregiving showing on Monday\, Sept. 8. \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for Caregiving\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeorgia O’Keeffe: The Brightness of Light\n\n\n\nNR | 1h 58min\n\n\n\nDirector: Paul Wagner\n\n\n\nStars: Claire Danes\, Hugh Dancy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeorgia O’Keeffe was affectionately known as the “Mother of American Modernism.” She lived for 98 captivating years that produced countless masterpieces and a great deal of interest in her personal life. \n\n\n\nGeorgia O’Keeffe: The Brightness of Light is a comprehensive window into O’Keeffe’s remarkable talent\, her relationship with fellow artist Alfred Stieglitz and the renowned painter’s lasting impact on an entire medium. \n\n\n\nThe film is narrated by Hannibal star Hugh Dancy\, and Emmy winner Claire Danes serves as O’Keeffe’s voice. The Brightness of Light was directed by Paul Wagner\, who won the 1985 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short as co-director of The Stone Carver. \n\n\n\nPaul and Ellen Casey Wagner\, his producing partner and wife\, were inspired to make The Brightness of Light after perusing a museum exhibit about O’Keeffe in 2018. Their goal was to make the greatest documentary about O’Keeffe in nearly half a century. \n\n\n\n“In the last years of Georgia O’Keeffe’s life\, curator Sarah Greenough of the National Gallery of Art created an exhibit including letters to and from Alfred Stieglitz\,” Paul Wagner says. “O’Keeffe had only two requests regarding the presentation. We have attempted\, in creating our film\, to adhere to the same two standards—to make it beautiful and to make it honest.” \n\n\n\nPaul and Ellen Casey Wagner will participate in a virtual Q&A following the 3 p.m. The Brightness of Light showing on Sunday\, Aug. 31. \n\n\n\n\nTickets and Showtimes for The Brightness of Light

SUMMARY:'Clemente'
DESCRIPTION:Local filmmaker David Altrogge’s documentary about The Great One is coming to The Lindsay!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets Here!\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay will soon be showing a locally produced documentary about arguably the greatest athlete to ever play for a Pittsburgh professional sports team. \n\n\n\nClemente will play at The Lindsay from (at least) Sept. 12-18. Duane Rieder\, founder of The Clemente Museum in Lawrenceville and a prominent local photographer\, will introduce the 4:30 p.m. Clemente screening on Sunday\, Sept. 14. \n\n\n\nDirector David Altrogge’s film spotlights Pirates legend Roberto Clemente’s amazing life\, baseball career\, and why he remains such a revered figure in Western Pennsylvania and beyond. \n\n\n\nThe film starts with Clemente’s childhood in Puerto Rico\, takes viewers through his Pirates heyday\, and immortalizes The Great One’s philanthropic legacy that was tragically exemplified by his 1972 death in a plane crash while delivering aid to Nicaragua. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe documentary includes interviews with Clemente’s sons\, Luis and Robert Jr.; the last interview with his late wife\, Vera; multiple Pirates legends; contemporary Major League Baseball stars like Francisco Lindor and Yadier Molina; Pittsburgh-raised movie star Michael Keaton; and Rita Moreno\, an Oscar-winning actor and fellow Puerto Rican icon. \n\n\n\nAltrogge is the co-founder of locally based production company Vinegar Hill. He and Vinegar Hill co-founder Michael Barnett produced Clemente alongside a group that also includes renowned director Richard Linklater and the SpringHill Company duo of Maverick Carter and NBA superstar LeBron James. \n\n\n\nThis is the second Altrogge-directed film to play at The Lindsay. Neat: The Story of Bourbon was part of the Theater’s 2024 Documentary Series. Altrogge graciously appeared at the Theater for a Neat Q&A\, and we hope he’ll be available again to discuss making this beautiful tribute to The Great One with Lindsay patrons. \n\n\n\n“Clemente is a quintessential Pittsburgh story\,” Altrogge says. “His mission was about bringing people together. We hope this film brings people together in Pittsburgh and across the world.”

SUMMARY:'Not If I See You First'
DESCRIPTION:Check out this local screening of Pittsburgher Kenny Zimlinghaus’ new buddy comedy!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP Here!\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Lindsay’s latest Emerging Filmmakers Showcase is a brand-new buddy comedy starring a prominent Pittsburgh media personality. \n\n\n\nNot If I See You First was written and directed by Illinois-based filmmaker Aaron Wertheimer. It stars Wertheimer and Jefferson Hills’ Kenny Zimlinghaus as two guys whose lives are forever changed after a chance meeting in Chicago. \n\n\n\nThis two-hander will have its Western Pennsylvania premiere at The Lindsay on Thursday\, Sept. 18\, at 7 p.m. Zimlinghaus will be on hand for an in-person Q&A following the screening. Tickets are free\, but RSVPs are recommended in advance due to space limitations. \n\n\n\nKenny (Zimlinghaus) meets Aaron (Wertheimer) during a work trip to Chicago. Aaron convinces him to extend that trip. But when Kenny’s car explodes and Aaron gets selective amnesia\, will their fledgling friendship survive? The Not If I See You First cast also includes Johanna Wertheimer\, Elizabeth Stam and Leslie Crum. \n\n\n\n\nZimlinghaus is a Long Island\, N.Y.\, native who has been living in Western Pennsylvania for the past decade. The actor and nationally touring comedian is also a radio/podcast program coordinator in Robert Morris University’s Academic Media Center. His Not If I See You First character is also a Pittsburgher\, and he wears a “pretty sweet Pittsburgh shirt” for a large portion of his screen time. \n\n\n\n“Pittsburgh has been a special place for me\, and not just since I moved here\,” Zimlinghaus says. “My wife is from here\, and I’ve learned to really fall in love with it here. So getting to know the city and its humor\, I think this film fits right into the funny\, zany and obscure things people from Pittsburgh may find amusing. I’m looking forward to the screening\, and hope I do the Steel City proud!” \n\n\n\nWertheimer is a seasoned filmmaker who has now written and directed three comedies. Fun fact: The Skokie\, Ill.\, resident’s wife and two children all appear in Not If I See You First. Another fun fact: Wertheimer’s in-laws live in Squirrel Hill\, and Mario Lemieux is his favorite hockey player. \n\n\n\n“Not If I See You First is a straight-up heartfelt comedy\, which is becoming more and more rare in indie film\,” says Wertheimer. “A big goal with the film is just for people to get lost in its absurd logic and have a good time watching it.”

SUMMARY:Pittsburgh Silent Film Festival: 'Ben-Hur'
DESCRIPTION:Watch this 1925 biblical epic\, accompanied by live piano music\, at The Lindsay! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets Here!\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Pittsburgh Silent Film Society returns to The Lindsay in September with a century-old classic full of drama\, romance and epic chariot races. \n\n\n\nBen-Hur will play at The Lindsay on Sunday\, Sept. 28\, at 7 p.m.\, as part of the third annual Pittsburgh Silent Film Festival. This screening will be accompanied by live piano music\, courtesy of local composer Tyler Stoner. Tickets are available for $11. \n\n\n\nBen-Hur was directed by Fred Niblo and stars Ramon Novarro as Judah Ben-Hur\, an aristocrat-turned-slave who is unjustly imprisoned by a former friend. \n\n\n\nA slip of a brick during a Roman parade causes Judah to be sent off as a galley slave\, his property confiscated and his mother and sister imprisoned. Years later\, Judah returns to his homeland an exalted and wealthy Roman athlete. Unable to find his mother and sister\, and believing them dead\, he can think of nothing else than revenge. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe film’s cast also includes Francis X. Bushman as Roman officer Messala; Claire McDowell as Miriam\, Judah’s mother; Kathleen Key as Tirzah\, Judah’s sister; and May McAvoy as Esther\, a merchant’s daughter. \n\n\n\nThe Lindsay has been hosting Pittsburgh Silent Film Festival screenings since its inception in 2023. That year\, the Theater showed the 1920 silent horror film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. In 2024\, the Pittsburgh Silent Film Society brought fellow Robert Wiene film The Hands of Orlac to the Sewickley nonprofit theater. \n\n\n\nChad Hunter\, the Pittsburgh Silent Film Society’s founder\, reminds silent film aficionados that the Library of Congress added Ben-Hur to the National Film Registry in 1997 because it “had such a tremendous influence on filmmakers of the day.” \n\n\n\n“In this year’s festival\, Ben-Hur is one of just a couple titles that are rarely screened or seen anymore\,” Hunter says. “Seeing this film in a theater\, on the big screen\, with live piano accompaniment by Tyler Stoner\, is an opportunity not to be missed!”
