Two Filmgoers Turn Oscar Knowledge Into Free 2023 Admission to The Lindsay.
The winners of The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s 2023 Oscar Contest know everything, everywhere about films and the cinematic industry.
Savvy filmgoers Nick Lumley of Sewickley and Jason Harrington of Big Beaver earned free admission to The Lindsay for the remainder of 2023 by correctly predicting Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once,” plus the winners in 18 additional categories.
Lumley didn’t miss in any of the top categories, from Directing to Best Supporting Actor and Actress. He said he made his picks by keeping an eye on industry trends, particularly the Screen Actors Guild awards. He missed on makeup and costume design, picking Elvis in both categories over the eventual winners (The Whale and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, respectively) and choosing Le Pupille as Best Live Action Short over An Irish Goodbye.
He watched all the Best Picture nominees except Avatar: The Way of the Water, and though he really enjoyed Everything Everywhere, his personal favorite was The Fabelmans.
“I really like movies about making movies,” says Lumley, who watches about 100 films a year. “We really appreciate having the theater so close by here in Sewickley,” Lumley said.
Beaver County resident Harrington was also drawn in by Elvis, picking Austin Butler to win Best Actor for his portrayal of Presley over Brendan Fraser in The Whale and the makeup/hairstyle team for Elvis as well. Besides the misstep with Best Actor, Harrington chose Angela Bassett to win Best Supporting Actress for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever over winner Jamie Lee Curtis in Everything Everywhere.” But he made the win by picking winners in a greater number of minor categories.
His personal favorite movies of the year were The Whale and Everything Everywhere. While he listens to podcasts and watches YouTube reviewers such as Weekly Planet to get a read on opinions, he also relied on his own gut feel and input from his father-in-law, John Carr, another avid moviegoer, in making his contest picks.
Moviegoing is a family affair for Harrington. “We go to see as many movies as we can together, every year.”
Congratulations to both winners, and thank you to each of the 90 entrants!
