Science on Screen Launches Tuesday at The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center
The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center is pleased to again join the National Science on Screen® Program. An initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theatre, with major support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Science on Screen highlights underlying scientific topics in popular features and documentaries. Alongside each film, outstanding experts share their knowledge–and nourish human curiosity!
Experts will give 15-minute presentations and take audience questions, providing opportunities for personal exchanges with nationally recognized leading experts.
The opening event on National Day of Science on Screen, Tuesday, March, 28, at 7 p.m. focuses on the diversification of STEM fields, featuring the film Woman in Motion and Astrobotic, Pittsburgh’s lunar lander builder, and the new Moonshot Museum.
In this documentary, watch how Nichelle Nichols, the late Star Trek actress (Lt. Uhura), began an initiative that recruited more than 8,000 Black, Asian and Hispanic men and women.
“And overnight”in mere months”the culture changed, ” remarks Roger Moore’s Movie Nation.
This work continues as Elena Petrak, a senior quality assurance engineer at Astrobotic, Pittsburgh’s lunar lander builder, presents Now Launching: Engineering, Lunar Landers and Alternative Pathways to STEM Careers, at 7 p.m., before the film. She’ll be joined by Lauren Shalek, manager of operations and visitor services at the affiliated Moonshot Museum, and Mike Hennessy, manager of programs and learning. They’ll talk about the museum that just opened in October 2022 on Pittsburgh’s North Side and collect hand-written notes for a lunar trip. This is your chance to write a message to be delivered to the moon!
