7 Things to Do in Pittsburgh This Weekend

The Lindsay Theater is celebrating Juneteenth with one of August Wilson’s most powerful stories—and one that has almost never been shown on the big screen.

The Piano Lesson, the third adaptation of Wilson’s Century Cycle produced by Denzel Washington, stars Danielle Deadwyler and John David Washington as a family torn apart by history. Having moved to Pittsburgh to escape the figurative (and, possibly, literal) ghosts of their Southern past, they reckon with personal history and modern injustice; it’s a haunting tale, beautifully performed and commandingly directed by Malcolm Washington (son of Denzel, brother of John David).

The Piano Lesson was released last year by Netflix—and, save a handful of screenings in major cities and debut events here, went straight to the streaming service, meaning the film has been unfortunately absent from the silver screen.

The Lindsay will present the film Thursday night to kick off Sewickley’s Juneteenth celebrations; the festivities will continue Sunday with a celebration featuring local performers and vendors, family activities and a performance by lauded Pittsburgh MC (and Lindsay board member) Frzy.
