Sewickley Valley Historical Society presents: ‘1776’

Experience this musical retelling of the Second Continental Congress at The Lindsay!

March 26 @ 6:30 pm 9:00 pm

Prior to Hamilton, history buffs who wanted to learn more about America’s origins through song and dance turned to 1776.

Director Peter H. Hunt’s big-screen adaptation of the Best Musical Tony Award-winning stage show first hit theaters in 1972. 1776 is a musical retelling of the many debates between representatives of America’s first Thirteen Colonies that led to the Declaration of Independence’s ratification.

The Lindsay is partnering with the Sewickley Valley Historical Society to show 1776 on Thursday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are now on sale for $8.75 each.

1776 features notable historical figures such as John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, Richard Henry Lee and John Dickinson. They all sing their way through the Second Continental Congress, which ultimately resulted in our Founding Fathers signing one of the most important documents in American history.

“1776 brings to life the vibrant personalities that helped bring America to life,” raves Salon. “At least once a year, every American should watch this musical,” declares Common Sense Media.

The Sewickley Valley Historical Society is celebrating the United States’ 250th birthday by showing three thematically linked films at The Lindsay in 2026. 1776 will be the second screening in this series.

It will kick off on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. with a 45-minute version of Ken Burns’ acclaimed The American Revolution docuseries. This series’ grand finale will be sci-fi comedy The Spirit of ’76 on Thursday, April 30, at 7 p.m.
