The decade began with the Sony Walkman and ended with the first stirrings of the World Wide Web. Across the globe, people played Pac-Man, obsessed over Princess Di and watched the Berlin Wall topple.

Here, in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, we saw more ups and downs than Kennywood’s Jack Rabbit. We suffered through the steel industry demise and mourned the loss of Andy Warhol. On the bright side, in 1980, the Steelers clinched their fourth Super Bowl. A few years later, a Canadian teen named Mario arrived—and the rest is history.
